Crocheted Teddy Bears Pattern

Materials Required—The following AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY Products:

13" BEAR. (Top of head to sole of feet.) "DAWN" WORSTED FLOSS. 1 oz. Balls. 4 Balls Pink, 1 Ball Blue. Bone Crochet Hook No. 2 or 3.

16" BEAR. "DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED, 1 ¼ oz. Skeins. 6 Skeins White, 1 Skein Brown. Bone Crochet Hook No. 4 or 5.

19" BEAR. "STAR" COTTON YARN, 100 yd. Skeins. 7 Skeins Brown, 1 Skein Yellow. Bone Crochet Hook No. 6.

Cotton or Kapok for filling.

The entire body and head of Bear is worked in 1 row of s c and 1 row of double loop sts.

BACK OF BODY. With White ch 26 and work 25 s c on ch (ch 1 to turn each row). 2nd Row—1 double loop st in each s c (loop st, wind yarn over index finger twice, insert hook in st, draw yarn through pulling yarn from under finger, drop loops from finger, letting them fall to right side of work and complete s c). 3rd Row—1 s c in each s c. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows 18 times, then work 1 more row of loop sts. 41st Row— Sl st in each of the next 4 s c and work 1 s c in each of the next 17 sts, leaving 4 sts free at each end for shoulders. 42nd Row—Work 1 loop st in each st. 43rd Row—Work in sc, increasing 1 s c in first and last st. 44th Row—Work even in loop st. Repeat last 2 rows 5 times. 55th Row—Start decreasing to shape back of head, 1 s c in each st decreasing 1 st at the beginning and end of row. 56th Row—Work even in loop st. Repeat the last 2 rows 5 times, break yarn.

LEFT FRONT OF BODY. Ch 20 and work 19 s c on ch. 2nd Row—Work a row of loop sts even. Continue working the same as back for 30 more rows, break yarn.

33rd Row starts HEAD. Join yarn in 5th st from end leaving the 1st 4 sts free for shoulder and work 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts. 34th Row—Work even in loop sts. 35th Row—Increase 1 s c at the beginning and end of row. Repeat the 34th and 35th rows once, then ch 8 for nose, turn. 38th Row—Work 7 s c on ch, then continue across head in loop sts. 39th Row—1 s c in each s c of head and nose. 40th Row—1 s c in each of the 7 s c, then continue across head in loop sts. Repeat the last 2 rows 3 times. 47th Row—Decrease 1 st at the beginning of row, 1 s c in each s c omitting the last 8 s c, ch 1, turn. 48th Row—Work even in loop sts. 49th Row—Decrease 1 st at the beginning and end of row. Repeat last 2 rows once, then work 1 more row of loop sts, break yarn.

RIGHT FRONT. Work the same as the first 32 rows of left front. 33rd Row—Without breaking yarn turn and work 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts, leaving last 4 sts free for shoulder. 34th Row—Work even in loop sts. 35th Row—Increase 1 s c at the beginning and end of row. 36th Row—Work in loop st, then ch 8 for nose. 37th Row—7 s c on ch, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 15 sts, 2 s c in last st. 38th Row—1 loop st in each of next 19 s c, 1 s c in each of the 7 nose sts. 39th Row—1 s c in each st. 40th Row—1 loop st in each s c, working 1 s c in each of the 7 nose sts. Repeat the last 2 rows twice. 45th Row—1 s c in each st. 46th Row—1 loop st in each of the 19 sts, omitting last 7 nose sts, ch 1, turn. 47th Row—1 s c in each st, decreasing 1 st at end of row. Next 5 Rows—Work same as last 5 rows of left front, break yarn.

CENTER HEAD PIECE. Ch 2, 1 s c in second st from hook, ch 1 to turn each row. 2nd Row—2 s c in s c. Work 2 rows even. 5th Row—2 s c in first s c, 1 s c in next s c. Work 2 rows even. 8th Row—2 s c in first s c, 1 s c in each of next 2 s c. Work 2 rows even. Continue to increase 1 s c at the beginning of every third row until there are 9 s c in row, then work 2 rows even. 26th Row—Loop st in each s c. 27th Row—Work in s c, increasing one s c in first and last st. Repeat the last 2 rows until there are 17 s c in row, then work even, working 1 loop st row and 1 s c row until there are 44 rows from beginning, break yarn.

ARMS. With Brown, ch 2, 6 s c in second st from hook. 2nd Row—Without joining rows work 2 s c in each s c, working in back loop of st. (12 s c). 3rd Row—* 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around. (18 s c). 4th Row—Increase 1 s c in every 3rd s c. (24 s c). 5th Row—Increase 1 s c in every 4th s c. (30 s c). Work 1 row even, break yarn. 7th Row—Join White and working in back loop of st work 1 row even. Working in both loops of st, work next 15 rows even.

LEGS. With Brown, ch 2, and work 8 s c in 2nd st from hook. Work next 4 rows same as arms, increasing in same manner having 40 s c in the last row and work 1 row even. Next Row—Attach White and work same as 7th row of arms. Working in both loops work 22 rows even. Next Row—Decrease 8 sts and work 4 rows even, break yarn.

EARS. With White, ch 20, work 19 s c on ch, ch 1 to turn each row. 2nd Row—Decrease 1 s c at beginning of row, work 3 s c in center s c, decrease 1 s c at end of row. Work next 6 rows same as 2nd row, break yarn. Join yarn in first row and work 1 row of s c around both sides of ear, working 1 s c in each row, and 1 s c in each s c, break yarn.

TO ASSEMBLE BEAR. Sew last row of center head piece to top of back body section (the plain part is for the nose). Sew left front section in position starting at last st of last row of left front section and seam of last section just completed. Sew across top of head and center head piece down to nose matching the loops above nose. Sew the plain part of center head piece around the nose piece of left front section having the point at throat. Sew right front section to opposite side in same manner. Sew the two front sections together at front. Sew back body section to front body section fitting the side of head to center head piece matching shoulders and leaving last 14 rows of back body section free for sitting down. Sew opposite side in same manner. Fill body and sew lower part of back section to lower part of front section. Cut cardboard inner soles for legs. Fill legs and arms, sew top edges together. Sew arms to body starting at shoulders Sew legs to body at first row of front section. Sew ears in position. Large brown buttons are used for eyes. Embroider nose as illustrated using satin stitch. Shear all loops if desired.
