Lily SKYTONE Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 123:—
10 balls Yellow and 2 balls Shd. Greens; and
Lily Pearl Cotton, Art. 39, size 5:—2 balls each Brown, Dk. Brown, Emerald Green and Shd. Reds; sufficient for 4 Place Mats.
Steel crochet hook No. 10
Size—13 x 18½ inches.
Starting at left end with Yellow, ch 162, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in remaining 157 ch. Use the right side of this row as right side of doily. ROW 2—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 158 sts. ROW 3—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 86 dc. Hold back the last 2 lps of final dc on hook, drop Yellow on back, draw Shd. Greens thru lps, completing dc. Working over Yellow and starting end of Shd. Greens, make dc in next 3 dc. Hold back the last 2 lps of 3d dc on hook, drop Shd. Greens on back, draw up Yellow taut and thru the 2 lps on hook. Let Shd. Greens hang down at back and make dc in remaining 69 dc. ROW 4—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 44 dc, pull up Shd. Greens across side next you (back of doily) and draw thru the last 2 lps of final Yellow dc. Working over Yellow, make dc in next 6 dc. Drop Shd. Greens on side toward you, draw up Yellow taut and thru the last 2 lps of final Shd. Greens dc. Always join a new color in this way,—thru the last 2 lps of previous color,—always pulling it up taut first. When working with Yellow, do not work over the Shd. Greens, but do work over the Yellow when using Shd. Greens. Following Chart where each square equals 3 dc, make 15 Yellow dc, 6 Shd. Greens dc, 9 Yellow dc, 3 Shd. Greens dc, drop Shd Greens dc on side toward you and make 75 Yellow dc to end of row. ROW 5—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 71 dc, 6 Shd. Greens dc, drop Green on back, 9 Yellow dc, 9 Green dc, 9 Yellow dc, 6 Green dc and 48 Yellow dc. Continue thru Row 10. ROW 11—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 38 dc, join Emerald Green Pearl Cotton and make 6 dc, drop this Green on back,—to be picked up in next row. Continue across as in Chart. ROW 12—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 23 dc, 15 Shd. Greens dc, 9 Yellow dc, 3 Shd. Greens dc, 30 Yellow dc, 9 Shd. Greens dc, 9 Yellow dc, 3 Shd. Greens dc, 12 Yellow dc, drop Yellow on side toward you, make 3 Emerald Green dc, join Brown and make 3 dc, 9 Emerald Green dc, join a 2d ball of Yellow and make 30 dc to end of row. ROW 13—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 23 dc, drop this ball of Yellow on back, 6 Emerald Green dc, 3 Brown dc, 3 Emerald Green dc, 3 Brown dc, 6 Emerald Green dc, join next ball of Yellow and make 3 dc, 9 Shd. Greens dc and complete row. Continue, using 2 balls of Yellow, one to left of flower pot and one to right. In Row 15, join Dk. Brown to make branches and tree trunk. Fasten off this Brown after Row 23. Fasten off the Yellow ball to right of flower pot after Row 25. After Row 26, fasten off Brown and Emerald Green. Continue with 1 ball of Yellow and the Shd. Greens, thru Row 34. Fasten off Shd. Greens. Then make 2 rows in Yellow. ROW 37—Ch 3, turn, sk 1st dc, dc in next 2 dc, (ch 3, sk 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc) 3 times, (ch 3, sk 3 dc, dc in next 3 dc, ch 3, sk 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc) 11 times, (ch 3, sk 2 dc, dc in next 3 dc) 4 times (30 blks). ROW 38—Ch 6, turn, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, (ch 3, 3 dc in next sp) repeated across, end with ch 3, dc in top of end ch-3. ROW 39—Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in 1st sp, (ch 3, 3 dc in next sp) repeated across. Repeat Rows 38 and 39 thru Row 83. Fasten off. Turn and make a row in Brown. Fasten off. Turn and make a row in Emerald Green. Fasten off. Turn and make 2 rows in Yellow. Fasten off.
Edge—With right-side-up, join Yellow to 1st dc, (ch 4, sl st in 4th ch from hook for a p, ch 1, 3 sc in next sp) repeated across, ending with ch 4, p, ch 1, sc in end dc. Fasten off.
FLOWER—With Shd. Reds, ch 5, dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, sl st in same ch, sl st in next ch (center st of flower). * Ch 4, dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 3, sl st in same ch, sl st in center st of flower. Repeat from * 3 times (5 petals). Fasten off. Make 13 Flowers and sew on doily as marked with circles on Chart. Make a large Yellow French Knot in center of each Flower.
Stretch and pin doily light-side-down in true shape. Steam and press dry thru a cloth.
