Grape Garland Filet Centerpiece Pattern #5

MATERIALS REQUIRED:
Lily MERCROCHET Cotton, Art. 161, size 30 in White:—4 balls.
Size—19 inches square.
GAUGE:—7 sps = 1 inch, 7 rows = 1 inch; or
DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art 65, size 30 in White:—3 skeins; or
DAISY Mercerized Crochet Cotton, Art. 97, size 30 in White:—4 balls.
Size—22 inches square.
GAUGE:—6 sps = 1 inch, 6 rows = 1 inch.
Steel crochet hook No. 13.
A 7-inch square of linen.

Starting at center opening, make a chain about 28 inches long. ROW 1—2 dc in 4th ch from hook (half of corner shell made), * (ch 2, sk 2 sts of long ch, dc in next st) 36 times (36 sps made), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in same st with last dc (corner shell made). Repeat from * twice. Then make 35 sps on 4th side, ch 2, thread over, sk 2 sts of long ch, insert hook in next ch and on into st where starting half-shell was made, thread over, draw thru and complete a dc, being careful that row is untwisted all around, 2 dc in same place, ch 1 and join with hdc in top of 1st ch-3. Cut and rip excess chain and fasten off end on back. ROW 2—Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in ch-1 sp, * ch 2, sk next 2 dc of corner shell, dc in last dc, (ch 2, dc in next dc) 13 times (14 sps from corner half- shell), (2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc) 3 times (3 blks made), (ch 2, dc in next dc) 20 times (20 sps made across to 1st dc of next corner shell), ch 2, sk 2 dc of shell, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in ch-3 corner sp of shell. Repeat from * around 4 sides, ending with 3 dc in corner shell where row started, join with ch 1, hdc in top of 1st ch-3, drawing hdc down so it and the ch-1 equal 3-ch. ROW 3—Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in ch-1 sp, * ch 2, sk 2 dc of corner shell, dc in last dc, make 5 more sps, 1 blk, 14 sps, 2 dc in next sp, dc in next 4 dc (2 blks made), 9 sps, 3 blks, 4 sps across to 1st dc of corner shell, ch 2, sk 2 dc, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner ch-3 of shell. Repeat from * around 4 sides, ending with 3 dc in corner shell where row started, join with ch 1, hdc in top of 1st ch-3, drawing hdc down so it and the ch-1 equal 3-ch. ROW 4—Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in ch-1 sp, * ch 2, sk 2 dc of corner shell, dc in last dc, make 3 more sps, 2 blks, 3 sps, 1 blk, 3 sps, 2 blks, 4 sps, 2 blks, 12 sps, 3 blks and 5 sps across to 1st dc of corner shell, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in center ch-3 of shell. Repeat from * around 4 sides, ending as in last row. Continue, following Chart, turning each row, thru Row 48. Edge—Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in ch 1 sp, ** sc in next 3 dc, sc in next sp, ch 5, sl st in last sc for a p, sc in same sp, * sc in next dc, (2 sc in next sp, sc in next dc) twice, (sc, p, sc) in next sp. Repeat from * across side, sc in 3 dc of corner shell, (2 sc, p, 2 sc) in corner ch-3. Repeat from ** around doily. Join and fasten off.

Grape—Ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. ROW 1—Ch 1, sc, hdc, 2 dc, 2 tr, 7 dtr, 2 tr, 2 dc and hdc in ring. ROW 2—Without joining, (sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) repeated around, join, cut 8 inches long, thread to a needle and sew wrong-side-up on one grape (a circle on Chart). Make 136 Grapes and sew 34 on each side of doily with center ring of each at a lower right position when facing towards center of doily.

Inner Edge—Work dc around center opening, putting 2 dc in each sp, dc between sps. At corners, work 5 dc, holding back last lp of each dc on hook, thread over and draw thru all 6 lps on hook (Cluster made).

Stretch and pin Doily right-side-down in a true square. Steam and press dry thru a cloth. Hem inner edge down onto the linen square. Cut linen ¼ inch outside stitching. Turn this edge back against crochet and hem down on back of dc-row.
