Directions are given for small mat. Large mat is given in brackets.

With White ch 25 (29), s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.
2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c. Repeat the 2nd row 4(5) times, cut White.
Next Row. Attach Black and work 1 s c in each s c (this is the right side of work), cut Black, when changing color always complete last half of last st with next color.
Next Row. With White work 1 s c in each of the next 9(8) s c, drop White to front of work (wrong side), with Blue work 1 s c in each of the next 10 (14) s c, drop Blue, with another strand of White work 1 s c in each of the next 5 (6) sc.
Next Row. Working White over White and Blue over Blue, work 1 s c in each s c always keeping dropped yarn to wrong side of work.
Repeat the last row 3(5) times.
Next Row. With Black 1 s c in each of the next 15 (20) s c, with White 1 s c in each of the next 9 (8) s c, cut Black.
With White work even in s c for 6 (7) rows, cut White.
With Black work a row of s c all around working 3 s c in each corner, cut Black.
With Black embroider a vertical stripe using chain stitch on either side of Blue block having the stripe extend from top to lower edge on right hand side of Blue block and from top to end of Blue block on left hand side.
