MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 2 balls of main color, 1 ball of a light contrasting color and 1 ball of a dark contrasting color.
Cotton batting.
½ yard of lining material.
Bias fold tape.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 6 or 7.
GAUGE: 10 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch (1 square on chart is equivalent to 3 dc).

To Change Color: Before drawing through last 2 loops of last dc of one color group, drop this color, pick up 2nd color, thread over and draw through the 2 loops on hook. Continue with 2nd color according to chart, carrying the dropped color along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it.
CHAIR BACK … Starting at bottom with main color, ch 122 (to measure about 12 inches). 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (120 dc, counting turning ch as 1 dc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in each st across, dc in 3rd st of turning ch (120 dc). Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Holding light contrasting color along top of 2nd row, with main color make dc in each of 14 dc (thus concealing light color), changing color as above in last dc of main color group. With light contrasting color (working over main color to conceal it), work dc in next 21 dc, changing color as before in last dc of light color group. Concealing light color, work 6 main color dc, concealing main color, work 6 light color dc, drop light color and work with main color to end of row. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Holding dark contrasting color along top of 3rd row, with main color work dc in each of 11 dc, then concealing main color, work 27 dark color dc, concealing dark color, work 6 main color dc, concealing main color work 6 dark color dc. Drop dark color, then with main color work 12 dc. Pick up light color (allowing enough slack to lay along top of 9 sts of previous row) and work 6 light color dc (concealing both light and main colors). Concealing light color work 3 main color dc, concealing main color work 6 light color dc, concealing light color work 9 main color dc, concealing main color work 18 light color dc. Drop light color and work 15 dc with main color (to end of row). Ch 3, turn. Starting with 5th row, follow chart to top, changing colors as indicated by symbols, and adding new strands of color as necessary. X's on chart are embroidered later and squares in which they appear are crocheted in same color as face. If necessary to have any loose strands of color show, make sure that they are all on wrong side of work. Fasten off.
Using 4 strands of contrasting color, embroider features with cross stitch, as shown on chart. Block back to measurements given. Cut 2 pieces of lining material ¼ inch larger all around than crocheted piece. Sew the two pieces of material together, leaving an opening. After filling with cotton batting, sew up opening (finished pad should be slightly smaller than crocheted piece). Bind edges of crocheted piece with bias fold tape, leaving 8-inch ends at all corners for ties. Sew together the long edges of ties. Sew edges of crocheted piece to pad.
