Set of Bibs Pattern #5208

MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS CROCHET CORD, 2 balls each of 3 colors referred to in directions as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd colors.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.
Double fold bias tape.
The above amount of material is sufficient for set of 3 bibs.

GAUGE: 9 sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 2 inches. Each square on chart is equivalent to 3 dc.

To Change Color: Before drawing through last 2 loops of last dc of one color group, drop this color, pick up other color, thread over and draw through the 2 loops on hook. Continue with other color, carrying the dropped color along top of previous row and working over it to conceal it.

ELEPHANT BIB … With 1st color ch 83 to measure 9½ inches. 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (81 dc, counting turning ch as 1 dc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd to 9th rows incl: Dc in each dc, dc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 10th row: Holding 2nd color along top of previous row, with 1st color make dc in 8 dc (thus concealing 2nd color), changing color in last dc. With 2nd color make dc in 6 dc, carrying 1st color concealed in dc's and changing color in last dc. With 1st color make dc in 6 dc, carrying 2nd color concealed in dc's and changing color in last dc. Conceal 1st color in next 9 dc, changing color in last dc. Conceal 2nd color in next 3 dc, changing color in last dc. Conceal 1st color in next 9 dc, changing color as before. Conceal 2nd color in next 9 dc, changing color as before. Conceal 1st color in next 9 dc, changing color. Conceal 2nd color in next 21 dc. With 1st color ch 3, turn. 11th row: Carrying unused color and changing color as before, make 11 dc of 1st color, 3 of 2nd color, 9 of 1st color, 6 of 2nd color, 12 of 1st color, 6 of 2nd color, 6 of 1st color, 6 of 2nd color, 3 of 1st color, 9 of 2nd color, 9 of 1st color. With 1st color ch 3, turn. Starting with 3rd row, follow Elephant chart to top. Fasten off 2nd color. Work 9 rows straight with 1st color. Ch 3, turn.

For Neck Shaping ... 1st row: Dc in 36 dc, h dc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc. Turn. 2nd row: Sl st in sc, h dc and dc, sc in next dc, h dc in next dc, dc in remaining sts. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in 30 dc, h dc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc. Turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. 5th row: Dc in 24 dc, h dc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc. Turn. Neck shaping is complete. 6th row: Sl st in sc, h dc and dc, ch 3, dc in 20 dc; h dc in next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sl st in top st of turning ch. Turn. 7th row: Sl st in sc, 2 h dc and dc, sc in next dc, h dc in next 2 dc, dc in remaining sts. Ch 3, turn. 8th row: Dc in 12 dc, h dc in next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc. Turn. 9th row: Same as the 7th row. 10th row: Dc in 4 dc, h dc in next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc. Turn. 11th row: Sl st in sc, 2 h dc and dc, sc in next dc, h dc in next 2 dc, dc in top st of turning ch. Fasten off. Skip 1 st, attach thread in next st, sc in next st, h dc in next st, and continue thus working other side to correspond. Fasten off. Bind outer edge with bias tape, sewing first fold of tape down on right side with machine, then turning tape to wrong side and whipping down by hand. Bind neck edge, allowing 12 inches of tape at each end for ties. Machine stitch the edges of each tie to prevent raveling.

BEAR BIB … With 3rd color ch 83 to measure 9½ inches. Work 1st to 5th rows incl same as on Elephant Bib. 6th row: Carrying unused color and changing color as described in Elephant Bib, make 14 dc of 3rd color, 12 dc of 1st color, 54 dc of 3rd color. With 3rd color, ch 3, turn. Starting with 2nd row follow Bear chart to top. Fasten off 1st color. Work 6 rows straight with 3rd color. Ch 3, turn. Shape neck and remainder of bib same as for Elephant Bib. Finish outer and neck edges with bias tape.

CAT BIB … With 2nd color ch 83 to measure 9½ inches. Work 1st to 7th rows incl same as on Elephant Bib. 8th row: Carrying unused color and changing color as described in Elephant Bib, make 17 dc of 2nd color, 9 dc of 3rd color, 6 of 2nd color, 27 of 3rd color, 21 of 2nd color. With 2nd color, ch 3, turn. Starting with 2nd row, follow Cat chart to top. Fasten off 3rd color. Work 7 rows straight with 2nd color. Ch 3, turn. Shape neck and remainder of bib same as for Elephant Bib. Finish outer and neck edges with bias tape.
