BACK … Starting at crotch, with light color ch 23 for both sizes. 1st row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across (11 sc). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 1st sc, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 1; sc under turning ch (1 st increased on row). Drop light color. With dark color ch 4, turn. 3rd row: With dark color work sc in 1st sc, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sc under turning ch; ch 1, sc in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 4, turn (2 sts increased on row). 4th row: Same as 3rd row but do not ch to turn at end of row. Drop dark color, pick light color, ch 4, turn. 5th row: With light color work sc in 1st sc, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sc under turning ch. Ch 4, turn (1 st increased on row). Repeat the 2nd to 5th rows incl, thus increasing 1 st on each light color row and 2 sts on each dark color row until piece measures 4¾ (5¼) inches from beginning, ending with complete stripe of either color. Piece should measure about 14 (15) inches across last row. Continuing striped pattern, ch 3, turn. Next row: Sc in ch-1 sp, * ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn (no increases). Working stripes as before, repeat the last row 5 more times. Ch 3, turn. Following row: Skip 1st sp, sc in next sp, * ch 1, sc in next sp. Repeat from * across, ending with sc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn (1 st decreased on row). Repeat the last row once more. Continue repeating the last 8 rows, thus decreasing 2 sts every 8 rows until piece measures 9 (10) inches from starting ch, measuring down center of piece. Fasten off.

FRONT … Same as Back until piece measures 4¾ (5¼) inches. Insert a marker at both sides of work. Work 2 rows straight, then dec 1 st on each of the next 6 rows. Repeat the last 8 rows, thus decreasing 6 sts every 8 rows until piece measures 13½ (14½) inches in all. Fasten off.

STRAP (Make 2) … With light color, ch 9. 1st row: Sc in 3rd ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1 ch, sc in next ch) 3 times. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Sc in sp, (ch 1, sc in next sp) twice; ch 1, sc under turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Work in striped pattern until Strap measures 13 inches. Fasten off.

FINISHING … With dark color work a row of sc across top of Back, holding edge in to measure 8½ inches. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last row until band measures ½ inch. Fasten off. Starting with right side facing, using dark color, work 2 rows of sc completely around all other edges of Back, keeping work flat. Fasten off. Work a row of sc completely around all edges of Front, making a buttonhole on each side about 5 inches from lower edge of side. To make a buttonhole, ch 3, skip 1 row of Front, sc on next row. On following row of edging, work 3 sc over the ch-3. Reinforce inner edge of buttonholes with sewing needles. Work 2 rows of sc around straps, making a ch-3 buttonhole at one end. Sew seam at crotch. Sew side seams, placing front edging over Back and leaving a 2-inch opening at top. Sew straps to top of Front as in illustration. Sew 1 button at each side and 2 buttons at Back for straps.
