Striped Kitchen Set Pattern

J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 8 balls of No. 1 White.
J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN" METALLIC, Art. A.64: 14 balls each of No. M.1 White and No. M.122 Watermelon.
COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 14 balls of No. 12-A Blue Sparkle.
COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. COTTON RUG YARN, Art. C.204: 8 skeins (70 yd. "Tangle-Proof" Skeins) of No. 1 White.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 9.

GAUGE:
No. 2/0 hook: 11 sts make 2 inches; 9 rows make 2 inches.
No. 9 plastic hook: 7 sc make 2 inches; 6 rows make 2 inches.

Each Place Mat measures 12 x 18 inches.

Each Chair Seat measures 18 inches square.

Rug measures 24 x 36 inches.

PLACE MAT (Make 2) … Starting at long side with one strand each of White "Knit-Cro-Sheen" and White "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, and using 2/0 hook, ch 93. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Drop White. Attach Blue Sparkle and ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in back loop of first sc, dc at base of next sc, * sc in back loop of next sc, holding back on hook last loop of each dc, make dc at base of next sc, and dc at base of preceding sc on same row, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (crossed joint dc made). Repeat from * across, ending with a crossed joint dc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each st across. Drop Blue Sparkle, pick up both strands of White. Ch 1, turn. 5th and 6th rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows. At end of 6th row, drop White, attach 2 strands of Watermelon. Ch 1, turn. 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows. At end of 8th row, drop Watermelon, attach White. Ch 1, turn. 9th and 10th rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows. At end of 10th row, drop White, pick up Blue Sparkle. Ch 1, turn. The 3rd to 10th rows incl constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 11 inches, end­ing with 5th row. Do not turn at end of last row. Break off all colors, except White.

BORDER ... 1st row: Sc closely along side edge, now, working across opposite side of starting chain, make 3 sc in first ch, sc in each ch across, making 3 sc in last ch; sc closely across next side, sl st in first sc on last row. Break off. Do not turn. Now work in rnds. 1st rnd: Attach thread to first sc, 3 sc in same place, sc closely around, making 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group and 3 sc in last corner. Join. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around, making 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group. Join. 3rd rnd: Sl st in each sc around. Join and break off.

CHAIR SEAT (Make 2) … Starting at lower edge, ch 93. Work exactly as for Place Mat until piece is square, ending with 5th row.

BORDER … Work as for Place Mat until first row has been completed. Break off.

POT HOLDER (Make 2) . . . Starting at lower edge with one strand each of White "Knit-Cro-Sheen" and White "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic, and No. 2/0 hook, ch 39. Work as for Place Mat until 29 rows have been completed. Do not turn at end of 29th row.

BORDER1st row: Work as for first row of Place Mat. Break off. 2nd row: Attach thread to first sc, sc in each sc across. Do not break off. Sl st in each st around. Join and break off.
