Chevron Afghan Pattern #695

Size 50 x 70 inches

MATERIAL:
7 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) eggshell
2 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) gold
5 skeins Knitting Worsted (4 oz. skein) cocoa
1 aluminum afghan crochet hook 10" long No. 8 or H

GAUGE:  4 sts. = 1 inch, 4 rows = 1 inch

AFGHAN STRIP: (Make 4)
     With eggshell and No. 8 afghan crochet hook ch. 30 1st row: insert needle in 2nd st. from hook and pull up a loop, retain loop on needle, repeat in every chain across row. (This is half of afghan st. row.) 2nd row: yarn over hook, pull through first loop, * yarn over hook, pull through 2 loops, repeat * across row until only 1 loop is left on hook. (This finishes afghan st. row.) 3rd row: Pull up a loop through the 2nd and all succeeding vertical bars to within 1 st. of end, insert hook through both vertical bars of end st. (to give this side of work a firm edge), retaining all loops on hook. 4th row: work loops off as 2nd row. Repeat 3rd and 4th row alternately until strip measures approx. 64 inch. and has 257 rows. Work 1 row of slip st. taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off.

NARROW STRIP:
     With gold and No. 8 afghan crochet hook ch. 9 and follow directions for afghan st. as given for eggshell strip for 16 rows. * 17th row: draw up a loop in each of the first 3 vertical bars (4 loops on hook), yarn over hook twice, counting down 3 rows, draw up a loop through vertical bar of 2nd st. in this row, y.o. and through 1 loop, y.o. and through 2 loops twice in succession, yarn over hook twice, skip next 5 sts. in same row as 1st part of chevron was worked, draw up a loop through vertical bar of next st., y.o. and through 1 loop, y.o. and through 2 loops twice in succession, y.o. and through 2 loops (thus closing chevron) skip st. in back of just completed chevron, draw up a loop in each of the next 4 vertical bars (9 loops on hook). Work off loops in same way as regular afghan st. 18th row: work afghan st. (a complete row). Repeat 17th and 18th row 5 times more. Then work 15 rows afghan st. *. Repeat from * to * 8 times more. Work 13 rows afghan st. Work 1 row slip st., taking up the vertical bars of all sts. Fasten off. Work 2 more gold strips the same way. Work 8 cocoa strips starting with chevron design in 4th row thus reversing pattern.

FINISHING:
     Sew strips together from wrong side with an overhand stitch, taking up top thread of each st. on each edge only. Arrange strips as follows: 1 cocoa, * 1 eggshell, 1 cocoa, 1 gold, 1 cocoa, repeat from * twice more, end off with 1 eggshell and 1 cocoa.

EDGING:
     With eggshell work 1 row s.c. around the entire afghan working 3 s.c. in each corner st. and repeat this row once more in cocoa. Starting in one corner with eggshell work as follows. * 1 s.c., 1 h.d.c., 1 d.c., 1 treble, 1 d.c., 1 h.d.c. 1 s.c. in one st., ch. 1, skip 2, 1 s.c. in next st., ch. 1, skip 2 and repeat from * all around. Fasten off and block to size.
