J. & P. Coats—9 balls of White or Ecru,
or
Clark's O.N.T.—14 balls of White or Ecru.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 12.
1¼ yards of very fine fabric, 45 inches wide.
GAUGE: 4½ sps make 1 inch; 4½ rows make 1 inch. Tea cloth measures about 49 inches square.
Starting where indicated on chart, ch 67. 1st row: Tr in 11th ch from hook, tr in next 4 ch, (ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch) 6 times; tr in next 28 ch. Ch 11, turn. 2nd row: Tr in 5th ch from hook, tr in next 6 ch, tr in next tr (2 bls increased), ch 3, skip 3 tr, tr in next tr (sp over bl made); (ch 7, skip 7 tr, tr in next tr) 3 times; 3 tr in next sp, tr in next tr (bl over sp made); ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, (ch 3, skip 1 ch, tr and 1 ch, tr in next ch) 4 times (4 small honeycombs made); ch 1, tr in next tr, tr in next 4 tr (bl over bl made), ch 3, skip 3 sts of turning ch, tr in next ch (sp over sp made). Ch 7, turn. 3rd row: Tr in next tr, make 1 bl, 5 small honeycombs, 1 bl, ch 3, skip 3 ch, tr in next ch, (ch 7, tr in center st of next ch-7) twice; ch 7, skip next tr, tr in next tr (3 large honeycombs made); ch 7, make a foundation tr in top st of turning ch as follows: Thread over hook twice, insert hook in top st of turning ch and draw loop through; thread over and draw through 1 loop—1 ch st made to be used as a foundation st for next tr—complete tr in usual way—foundation tr completed. Make 7 more foundation tr's and 1 more tr in the usual way (2 bls increased). Ch 7, turn. 4th row: Inc 1 bl, make 3 sps, 1 large honeycomb, 1 sp, tr in next 4 ch, 2 large honeycombs, 1 bl, ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch, 4 small honeycombs, ch 1, tr in next tr, 1 bl, 1 sp, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr, turn, sl st in 4 ch (1 sp increased). Ch 14, do not turn. 5th row: Tr in 11th ch from hook, ch 3, tr in same place as last sl st (2 sps increased), make 1 more sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 3 small honeycombs, 1 bl, 3 large honeycombs, 1 sp, 2 bls, 1 sp, 2 large honeycombs, 1 sp, inc 1 bl. Ch 7, turn.
Now follow chart until 14th row is completed (1 sp decreased at end of 14th row). Turn. 15th row: Sl st in 3 ch and in next tr (1 sp decreased), ch 7, tr in next tr and follow chart across (1 bl decreased), ch 4, turn. Now follow chart to top of corner finishing scallops individually. Fasten off. Attach thread at "X" and follow chart for other side of lace. Make 8 scallops (between A and B on chart) between corners on all four sides and turn corners as before. When lace is finished sew last row to foundation chain with invisible sts. To even up the inner edge of lace, work as follows: 1st rnd: Attach thread to 1st of 3 sps at top of any inner scallop, * sl st across top of 3 sps, sc in same place as last sl st, ch 5, sc in next sp, (ch 3, skip next sp, tr in next st) twice; ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook make tr in next tr, skip next sp, tr in top of tr of next sp, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, tr in next tr, ch 4, sl st in corner of next sp, (ch 3, skip 1 sp, tr in next st) 4 times; ch 3, sl st in corner of next sp, work along side of scallop to correspond with opposite side of previous scallop. Repeat from * around, working along inner edges of corners as necessary to even up edge. Join. 2nd rnd: Work sc closely around. Join and fasten off.
Block lace. Put lace on fabric and baste in place. Sew lace to fabric, cut away excess material and finish raw edges neatly.
