Steel Crochet Hook No. 5.
1 yard 1-inch ribbon.
1 small button.
GAUGE: 5 star sts make 1 inch; 7 rows make 2 inches.
Starting at bottom make a chain to measure about 16 inches (10 ch sts to an inch). 1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, (insert hook in next ch and draw loop through to same height as, other loops on hook) 3 times; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (a star st made). * Insert hook in fastening ch just made and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in ch where last loop of previous star st was drawn through and draw loop through, skip 1 ch, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (another star st made). Repeat from * across until 72 star sts are made. Cut off remaining ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through to same height as other loops on hook, insert hook in fastening ch of star st below and draw loop through, insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (another star st made). * Insert hook in fastening ch just made and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in same fastening ch where last loop of previous star st was drawn through and draw loop through, insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (another star st made). Repeat from * across, drawing up last loop of last star st in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row once more. Next row: Work in pattern (as for 2nd row) across 20 star sts. Ch 3, turn. Work in pattern over these 20 star sts only for 2 more rows. Fasten off.
Attach thread in place where last loop of last star st on 4th row was drawn through. Ch 3 and work in pattern across 5 star sts for 3 rows. Fasten off. For center section, attach thread in place where last loop of last star st on 4th row was drawn through. Ch 3 and work in pattern across 22 star sts for 3 rows. Fasten off. Work other end to correspond, thus completing 6 rows. Do not fasten off. Ch 3, turn. Next row: Work in pattern across 20 star sts, make another star st, drawing up last loop of this st in fastening ch of 1st star st on next piece. Continue in pattern across, joining each piece in this manner (72 star sts on row). Work 2 more rows in pattern. Fasten off. Skip across 22 star sts, attach thread and work in pattern across 28 star sts. Ch 3, turn. Next row: Make a star st, drawing last loop through loop preceding fastening ch of next star st, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (1 star st increased), continue in pattern across to within last star st, make a star st, drawing last loop through loop preceding turning ch, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (another star st increased), make another star st. Ch 3, turn. Repeat this row once more.
Next row: Work in pattern across. Following row: Work in pattern across, increasing 1 star st at beginning and end of row. Following row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through to same height as other loops on hook (insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through) twice; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (1 star st decreased), finish row in pattern. Next row: Work in pattern across to within last 2 star sts, insert hook in fastening ch just made and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through, insert hook in top st of turning ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (1 star st decreased). Ch 3, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows once more. Dec 1 star st at outer edge of next 3 rows. Then work 2 rows straight. Dec 1 star st at each end of next row and every 3rd row thereafter until 3 star sts remain. Fasten off. Skip next 8 star sts on last complete row, attach thread and work to correspond with other side.
Attach thread at outer end of back opening and work 2 sc in each of the 3 star sts across to neck edge, work sc around neck edge, holding in slightly to curve, ch 5 for buttonloop, 2 sc in each star st across to outer edge, * 2 sc in next row, 3 sc in following row. Repeat from * around corner to corner; then work 2 sc in each star st across to next corner, 2 sc in each row across to next corner and 2 sc in each star st across bottom of bib. Finish row to correspond with other side, ending with sc where thread was attached. Ch 5, turn. Next row: * Skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 5.
