Cap and Booties Pattern #5197

MATERIALS: CLARK'S O.N.T. "BRILLIANT," 7 balls.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 8.
4 yards ribbon, ½ wide (3 yards for Cap, 1 yard for Booties).

GAUGE: 11 dc make 1 inch; 5 rows of dc make 1 inch.

CAP

   Starting at center of Back, ch 10. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 15 sc in ring. Sl st in 1st sc made. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 7, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in 1st sc made (15 loops). 3rd, 4th and 5th rnds: * Ch 7, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in next tr. 6th rnd: Same as last rnd, only ending with ch 7, sl st in tr below. 7th rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 3 (to count as 1 dc), 7 dc in same loop, 8 dc in each loop around. Join with sl st in top st of first ch-3 (120 dc). 8th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 9th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 7, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in 1st sc made (40 loops). 10th rnd: Same as last rnd, only ending with ch 7, sl st in tr below. 11th rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 3, 3 dc in same loop, 4 dc in each loop around. Join (160 dc). 12th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join (piece measures 5 inches in diameter). Now work front of Cap back and forth in rows as follows: 1st row: Ch 3, dc in next 126 dc (127 sts). Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: * Skip 2 dc, in next dc make dc, ch 3 and dc; ch 5, skip 2 dc, sc in next dc, ch 5. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in top st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: * In next ch-3 sp, make 6 dc with ch 1 between (shell made), ch 1. Repeat from * across, ending with 6 dc with ch 1 between in last ch-3 sp. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: * In center ch-1 sp of next shell make dc, ch 3 and dc; ch 5, sc in ch-1 sp between shells, ch 5. Repeat from * across, ending with dc, ch 3 and dc in center ch-1 sp of last shell. Ch 5, turn. Repeat the 3rd and 4th rows alternately until front of Cap measures 4 inches, ending with the 4th row. Last row: In each ch-3 sp make 5 tr with a p between—to make a p, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook. Do not fasten off, but work along neck edge as follows: * Ch 5, sc in next turning ch. Repeat from * across side edge of front. Then ch 5, skip 3 dc, sl st in each dc to within last 3 dc, ch 5 and work across second side edge of front to correspond with first. Fasten off.

FINISHING ... Cut a 15-inch piece of ribbon and pass it in and out of openings between shells, about 1 inch in from front edge of Cap. Sew ends in place. Cut two ½-yard lengths for ties. Cut remaining ribbon in half and make 2 rosettes. Sew ties and rosettes to sides of Cap.

BOOTIES

FOOT—Toe Piece … Ch 15 (to measure 1¼ inches). 1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (13 dc, counting turning ch as 1 dc). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Dc in each dc across and in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat the 2nd row 4 more times (6 rows in all). Ch 55 for ankle, sl st in first st at beginning of last row. Fasten off. Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Attach thread to center st of ch-55 (this is center back), ch 3, dc in 27 ch, then work across edge of toe piece, making dc in top of each end dc or turning ch as the case may be, and 2 dc in the side of each end st (18 sts along side of toe piece). Make dc in each st of foundation chain of toe piece, work along other edge of toe piece as before, dc in each remaining ch, sl st in top st of starting ch (104 sts). 2nd to 7th rnds incl: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join. 8th, 9th and 10th rnds: Dc in each dc around, decreasing 5 dc evenly across toe and 5 dc evenly across heel on each rnd—to dec a dc, work off 2 dc as 1 dc. Join. Fasten off at end of 10th rnd. Sew edges together, forming sole.
   Now work top in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: Attach thread to center st of ankle chain, sc in same place, * ch 5, skip 2 sts, in next st make dc, ch 3 and dc; ch 5, skip 2 sts, sc in next st. Repeat from * 3 more times; ch 5, skip the 3 remaining sts of side and 2 sts of toe piece, in next st make dc, ch 3 and dc; ch 5, skip 3 sts, sc in next st, ch 5, skip 3 sts, in next st make dc, ch 3 and dc, ch 5, skip 2 sts of toe piece and 3 sts of side, sc in next st and work along side as before, ending with sl st in 1st sc made. 2nd rnd: Sl st in each of next 5 ch, in next dc and in next sp; ch 4 (to count as dc and ch 1), 5 dc in same sp with ch-1 between, * ch 1, in next sp make 6 dc with ch 1 between (shell made). Repeat from * around. Join last ch-1 with sl st to 3rd st of first ch-4. 3rd rnd: Sc in sp between first and last shell, * ch 5, in center ch-1 sp of shell make dc, ch 3 and dc, ch 5, sc between next 2 shells. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 1st sc made. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately until top section measures 3 inches, ending with the 3rd rnd. Last rnd: Sl st in next 5 ch, in the dc and in sp; ch 4, p, in same sp make 4 tr with p between; in each ch-3 sp around make 5 tr with p between. Join last tr with sl st to top st of starting ch. Fasten off.
   Cut ribbon in half. Run ribbon through space at ankle and tie in a bow.
