The King Cedric Dinner Cloth Pattern #729

The design for this lovely cloth was inspired by the King Cedric pattern of china, silverware and glassware, Oneida Community.

Materials: J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, color 66 Linen, 15 balls for cloth and 2 balls for 6 napkins; Pearl Cotton, Size 8, color 61-A Ecru, 4 balls.
Or Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, Size 30, color 66 Linen, 22 balls for cloth and 3 balls for 6 napkins; Pearl Cotton, Size 8, color 61-A Ecru, 10 skeins.
2½ yards of 72-inch Italian round linen for cloth and 1 yard for 6 napkins, cream color. (Size of cloth, 72 inches by 90 inches. Napkins, 18 inches square.)
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.

When completed, tablecloth measures about 72 x 90 inches, and each napkin about 18 inches square.

Gauge: 5 open mesh equal 1 inch; 5 rows equal 1 inch.

Corner:Begin at bottom of pattern. Ch 212. D c in 9th ch from hook, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next (this forms a space). Make 67 more sps (69 in all). Ch 5, turn. 2nd and 3rd rows: Row of sps. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: 8 sps, 2 d c in next sp, d c over d c (this forms a block), 1 more bl, 2 sps, 5 bls, 4 sps, and continue following block pattern corner. Work 3 more corners, taking care to have corners all uniform.

Side Piece: Begin at bottom. Ch 284 and follow block pattern at top of next page. (93 sps across.) Make 4.

Center Piece: Begin at A. Ch 227. Follow block pattern for these 11 rows, then begin at right side at B and work design to C, which marks half of length. Continue work­ing in pattern for 41 more rows and break off. Work left hand side to correspond, joining thread in 11th d c from end. Join the 2 pieces with ch 155, and follow block pattern for other end.

Napkin corner: Begin at bottom. Ch 77, and follow block pattern at top of 2nd column (24 sps across.) Make 6. With the Pearl Cotton or Six Strand Floss, outline the design as shown in illustration, taking care not to draw thread tightly, so that work will lie flat. Press all pieces on wrong side of work with damp cloth.

Baste corner to linen table cloth, leaving 3¼ inches for hem, making sure that all sides of the corner are on a straight thread. Then center the side piece and baste so that the upper and lower edges are on the same threads as the upper and lower edges of the corner piece. The pieces are to be connected with hemstitching, which means drawing 2 threads for top row and 2 threads for bottom row. Continue basting corners and side pieces as de­scribed. Baste the center piece in the center of the cloth, keeping all edges on a straight thread.

With Pearl Cotton or Six Strand Floss, satin-stitch or buttonhole around all the pieces, making stitches very close together. Baste the hem all around, turning under about ¼ inch, so hem will measure 1½ inches when finished. Mitre the corners. Finish hem by working lower row of hemstitching, connecting the pieces of work. Sew hem to lower edge of the pieces. Work upper row of hemstitching connecting pieces.

Finish napkins in same manner, leaving 1½ inches for hem when applying corners. Hem will be ½ when finished, with hemstitching all around except where corner is applied. After a thorough pressing on wrong side of work, cut material away from under the lace pieces with fine sharp scissors.
