Portland Afghan Pattern #6601

Size—About 60 x 72 inches

This is New England’s version of the old Mt. Vernon, or Granny Afghan as it is sometimes called. The boldness of this design suggests the rugged simplicity of our Pilgrim Ancestors.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

MINERVA MILADY KNITTING YARN (4 ounce skeins)
18 Skeins—Assorted Colors
8 Skeins—Black
—OR—
MINERVA AFGHAN GERMANTOWN (2 ounce skeins)
30 Skeins—Assorted Colors
14 Skeins—Black

1 No. 2 STEEL CROCHET HOOK

GAUGE: 3 Sts. to ½ inch.
(Finished Square measures about 6 inches.)

TO MAKE A SQUARE:

ROW 1—With any Color, Ch. 3, join in a ring, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in ring, Ch. 1, * 3 D.C. in ring, Ch. 1, repeat from * 2 more times, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at beginning of row, break yarn, fasten.
ROW 2—With 2nd Color, fasten yarn in one of the four corners, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, * 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, repeat from * around row, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at beginning of row, break yarn, fasten.
ROW 3—With 3rd Color, fasten yarn in one of the corners, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, * 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, repeat from * around row, ending, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at beginning of row, break yarn, fasten.
ROW 4—With 4th Color, fasten yarn in one of the corners, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, * 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, repeat from * around row, ending, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at beginning of row, break yarn, fasten.

Work 4 more rows in the same manner, 3 rows in con­trasting Color, and the last row in Black. This completes one Square.

Make 120 Squares and sew together on wrong side, 10 Squares wide and 12 Squares long.

BORDER:

Attach Black yarn in any space between the D.C. Sts., * Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 2, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, 1 S.C. in next space, repeat from * all around Afghan, break yarn, fasten.
