Materials Required — AMERICAN THREAD COM­PANY "STAR" RUG YARN, ARTICLE 44
15-80 yd. Skeins White.
"STAR" Pearl Cotton, Article 90.
4-50 yd Balls each Yellow and Green.
2-50 yd. Balls each Red and Black.
3-50 yd. Balls Blue.
5-50 yd. Balls Brown.
Bone Crochet Hook No. 6. Steel
Crochet Hooks No. 5 and No. 8.

Rug measures about 39 x 24½ inches.
For a smaller rug use "STAR" Cotton Yarn, Article 75.
12-100 yd. Skeins White.

With White Rug Yarn and No. 6 Needle, ch 67, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, working 2 s c in last st, ch 1 to turn each row.
2nd Row. Working in s c, increase 1 s c at the beginning and end of row. Work next 15 rows same as last row. Work even in s c until work measures 33½ inches from begin­ning.
Next 17 Rows. Decrease 1 s c at the beginning and end of each row.
Work a row of s c around entire rug, break yarn. Small leaves are worked with single strands of thread and No. 8 needle, remainder of trimming is worked with double strand of thread and No. 5 needle.
1st Flower. With Green, ch 2, 8 s c in 2nd st from hook, join in 1st s c. Place a marker at the beginning of each row.
2nd Row. 2 s c in each s c, do not join or turn rows.
3rd Row. 1 s c in 1st s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from be­ginning all around.
4th Row. Increase in every 3rd st.
5th Row. Increase in every 4th st. Work 1 row even.
7th Row. Increase in every 5th st.
8th Row. Increase in every 6th st. Work 1 row even, break thread. Embroider as illustrated. With Black, embroider a small circle in center using a satin st, then work 6 - ½ inch spokes around circle evenly spaced. With Red, em­broider 2 - ¼  inch sts at end of each spoke forming a V.
Petals. Attach Yellow, work 1 s c in each of the next 8 sts, ch 1 to turn each row.
2nd to 10th Rows. 1 s c in each s c.
11th Row. Decrease 1 st at the beginning and end of row. Work 1 row even. Repeat the last 2 rows twice, break thread.
Work 7 more petals in same manner.
2nd Flower. Center petal—With Red, ch 2, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook.
2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c.
3rd Row. 2 s c in each st.
4th Row. Increase 1 s c at the beginning and end of row. Repeat the 2nd and 4th rows 4 times, then work 3 rows even.
16th Row. Same as 4th row.
17th Row. Decrease 1 s c at the beginning and end of row. Repeat the last row until 2 sts remain, break thread.
Side Petal. Ch 2, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook.
2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c.
3rd Row. Work in s c increasing 1 s c at end of row. Repeat the last 2 rows 6 times, then decrease same as center petal until 1 st remains, break thread. Work an­other petal in same manner. Sew narrow ends of petals together as illustrated. With Yellow, embroider a small circle at joining using a satin st.
3rd Flower. With Blue, ch 4, 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 2 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn each row.
2nd Row. Work in s c increasing 1 s c at the beginning and end of row.
Repeat the last row 4 times. Work 1 row even.
8th Row. Same as 2nd row. Repeat the last 2 rows.
11th Row. Same as 2nd row. Work 1 row even.
13th & 14th Rows. Same as 2nd row. Work 1 row even.
16th Row. Start petal, 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c.
17th Row. Decrease 1 s c at the beginning of row, increase 1 s c at end of row.
18th Row. Increase 1 s c at the beginning of row, decrease 1 s c at end of row. Repeat the last 2 rows.
Next Row. Same as 17th row, break thread. Attach thread in 7th st from opposite edge and work another petal in same manner reversing the increases and decreases.
Center Petal. Attach thread in 1st free s c of 15th row, 1 s c in each of the next 5 sc.
2nd to 8th Rows. 1 s c in each of the 6 s c, then decrease in same manner as petals of 1st flower, break thread. Work another petal in remaining 6 sts.
4th Flower. Side Petals—With Red, work 2 petals same as side petal of 2nd flower.
Center Petal. With Yellow, work same as center petal of 2nd flower for the 1st 15 rows.
Next Row. Increase 1 st at beginning and end of row.
Next 2 Rows. Increase 2 sts at .beginning and end of each row.
Next Row. 1 s c in 1st s c, 1 d c in each of the next 9 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 1 d c in each of the next 9 s c, 1 s c in end st, break thread. Sew narrow ends of petals together as illustrated.
5th Flower. With Yellow, work center in same manner as 1st flower but work 10 s c in 1st row and increase 2 sts in last row. With Blue, work petals in same manner as petals of 1st flower, but work 1st 12 rows even. Embroider center same as 1st flower having 9 - 1 inch Black spokes around center and 9 - ½ inch Green spokes between. (Directions are for both large and small leaves, using double thread for large leaves and single thread for small leaves.)
Leaf. Ch 13, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 10 sts of ch, 3 s c in next st of ch, working on other side of ch, work 1 s c in each of the next 8 sts, ch 3, turn, picking up the back loop of st only, 1 s c in each of the next 9 s c, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, ch 3, turn, * 1 s c in each of the next 8 sts, 3 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, ch 3, turn, repeat from * 4 times, sl st in each of the next 2 s c, break thread. Work 13 large leaves and 23 small leaves.
Wide Stems. With Brown, ch 4, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn each row.
2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c. Repeat the 2nd row for length desired. Work various lengths of stems as illustrated.
Narrow Stems. With Brown, work a ch for desired length.
Border. With Black, work 2 lengths of ch long enough to go around entire rug. Sew to rug placing the 1st length about 1 inch from edge of rug and 2nd length about 1¾ inches from the 1st length. With Yellow, * ch 12, turn, s c in 2nd st from hook, repeat from * for length desired. Sew between Black chs as illustrated. Arrange and sew flower stems and leaves to rug as illustrated or arrange as desired. With Black, embroider 3rd and 4th flowers with outline sts as illustrated, placing a large Red French-knot at the end of each outline st of 3rd flower.
Bud. Work same as side petal of 2nd flower working 1 each of Red, Blue and Yellow, placing as illustrated.
Fringe. With White Rug Yarn, cut 2 strands about 7½ inches long, loop through s c, draw ends through tightly, skip 1 s c, repeat from beginning all round. Trim evenly.
