MATERIALS:

J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, in any color.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

Starting at one narrow end, ch 12. Join with sl st. 1st row: 20 s c in ring. Join with sl st to 1st s c made. Turn. 2nd row: Ch 3, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c (a loop made). Repeat from begin­ning of row until 5 loops in all are made. Turn. 3rd row: Sl st in 1st loop, ch 4, 3 tr in same loop, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster made), * ch 5, 4 tr in next loop, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr and complete cluster as before. Repeat from * 3 more times. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 5 s c in each of 4 sps, s c in tip of last cluster (21 s c in row). Ch 5, turn. 5th row: Skip next s c, d c in next s c, ch 2. Repeat from beginning of row across, ending with d c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: 2 s c in next sp, s c in next d c. Repeat from beginning of row across, ending with s c in 3rd st of turning ch (30 s c in row). Ch 4, turn. 7th row: 5 d c in next s c, drop loop from hook, insert hook in chain pre­ceding the 5 d c and draw dropped loop through (pc st made), * ch 3, skip 1 s c, pc st in next s c. Repeat from * across (15 pc sts in row). Turn. 8th row: Ch 3, s c in next sp. Repeat from beginning of row until 7 loops in all are made, ch 10, s c in next sp. Turn. 9th row: 15 s c in ch-10 loop, s c in next loop. Turn. 10th row: Sl st in next s c, s c in next s c, (ch 3, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c) 5 times. Turn. Repeat 3rd to 10th rows incl. for desired length, ending with the 7th row. Do not break off, but work along one long side as fol­lows:

HEADING … 1st row: * Ch 11, skip pc st and next sp, 3 d tr in next s c, holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr; 3 d tr in first free ch-3 loop, holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr, skip 2 loops, 3 d tr in next loop, holding back on hook the last loop of each d tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook; ch 8, skip 1 loop, d c in next loop, ch 3, s c in next loop, ch 3, d c in tip of pc st. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 3 s c in next 2 sps, 5 s c in next sp, ch 5, 5 s c in next sp. Repeat from beginning of row across. Ch 4, turn. 3rd row: Skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, ch 1. Repeat from beginning of row across. Fasten off.
