Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (19 balls) or J. & P. Coats (13 balls) Mercerized Crochet, Size 10, White. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 or 6. 2 pearl buttons.

Measurements. Shoulder to point, 18¾ inches. Across back of neck between shoulder pieces, 6 inches. Length of collar, 16½ inches (18½ inches for size 38).

Gauge: 12 sts to an inch, 12 rows to an inch.

   To begin, ch 110, turn. 1st row: 1 s c in 3rd ch from hook, 1 s c in each st of foundation ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in 1st s c (this is an increase) of previous row, 1 s c in each s c to end of row. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: 1 s c in each s c of row, ending with 2 s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each s c to end of row, ending with 2 s c in last s c (this is an increase at the neck). Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row, ch 1, turn. 6th row: Same as 2nd row. Ch 1, turn. 7th row: Same as 3rd row, ch 1, turn. 8th row: Same as 4th row, ch 1, turn. Repeat from 5th to 8th rows incl., thus increasing on every row at bottom of vest and on every 4th row at neck, until work measures 5¾ inches. Decrease 1 s c (to make a decrease, insert hook into st and pull thread through, insert hook into next st and pull thread through, thread over hook, and pull through all 3 loops on hook) on every other row at bottom of vest and increase 1 s c on every other row at neck, until work measures 7¼ inches. Increase 1 s c on every row at neck and decrease 1 s c on every other row at bottom until work measures 8 inches. Decrease 1 s c on every other row at bottom and on every 4th row at shoulder until work measures 9¼ inches, ending last row at neck. Do not break off.

Shaping Upper Outside Edge. 1st row: Beginning at neck work s c over 4¼ inches, 1 sl st in next s c, turn. 2nd row: Sl st over 5 s c of previous row, 1 s c in each st to end of row (continue decreasing at shoulder as before), ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c over 3½ inches, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 4th row: Sl st over 5 s c, 1 s c in each s c to end of row, ch 1, turn. 5th row: S c over 2½ inches, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 6th row: Sl st over 2 sts, s c to end of row, ch 1, turn. 7th row: S c over 2 inches, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 8th row: Same as 6th row, ch 1, turn. 9th row: S c over 1½ inches, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 10th row: Same as 6th row, ch 1, turn. 11th row: S c over 1 inch, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 12th row: Same as 6th row, ch 1, turn. 13th row: S c over ½ inch, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 14th row: Same as 6th row, ch 1, turn. 15th row: 2 s c, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 16th row: 1 sl st in next st, 1 s c in next. Break off thread. Attach at shoulder and sl st along side of vest. Break off thread. Make left side to correspond. Attach thread to bottom of vest and sl st to shoulder (thus having sl st on right side of vest).

Collar. To begin, ch 170, turn. 1st row: S c in 3rd ch from hook, 1 s c in each st of foundation ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in 1st s c, 1 s c in each s c to end of row, ending with 2 s c in last s c, ch 1, turn. * 3rd to 5th rows incl: S c in each s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. No increase. 6th row: S c in each st, increasing 1 s c at beginning and 1 s c at end of row, ch 1, turn. 7th to 10th rows incl: S c in each s c of previous row, ch 1, turn. No increase. 11th to 18th rows incl: Repeat from * once. 19th to 21st rows incl: Same as 7th row. 22nd row: S c in each s c, increasing 1 s c at beginning and 1 s c at end of row. Ch 1, turn. 23rd and 24th rows: S c in each s c to end of row. Ch 1, turn. 25th row: S c in each s c to within 3 s c from end of row, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 26th row: Sl st in 1st s c, s c in each s c to within 3 s c from end of row, 1 sl st in next st, turn. 27th to 38th rows incl: Sl st in 1st s c, s c in each s c to within 5 s c from end of row, 1 sl st in next st, turn. Break off thread. Attach and sl st along outer edge of collar. Break off thread and sew to vest.
