RUNNER No. 7171-A

When completed, runner measures about 16 x 44 inches.

MOTIF… Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 23 s c in ring. Join with sl st to ch-1 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 5, (to count as tr and ch-1), * tr in next s c, ch 1. Repeat from * around, join with sl st to 4th st of ch-5 first made (24 sps). 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 5, (to count as d c and ch-2), * d c in next sp, ch 2. Repeat from * around, join to 3rd st of ch-5 first made (24 sps). 4th rnd: Sl st in next sp, 3 s c in same sp, * ch 5, skip 1 sp, 3 s c in next sp, ch 7, skip 1 sp, 3 s c in next sp. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, tr in 1st s c made. 5th rnd: * Ch 6; in next ch-5 loop make two 3-tr clusters with ch-4 between clusters (to make a 3-tr cluster, make 3 tr in loop, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten); ch 6, s c in ch-7 loop. Repeat from * around, 6th rnd: * 7 s c in next loop, 6 s c in following loop (between clusters), 7 s c in next loop. Repeat from * around. 7th to 10th rnds incl: S c in each s c around. Sl st in next st at end of 10th rnd. 11th rnd: * Ch 7, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 4 s c, ch 5, skip 1 s c, s c in each of next 4 s c. Repeat from * around. 12th rnd: Sl st to center of next loop and work as for 5th rnd. Fasten and break off. This completes one motif.

Make 4 x 11 motifs, and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches, joining 2 points of one motif to 2 points of adjacent motifs, leaving 1 point free on each motif between joinings.

FILL-IN LACE1st rnd: Attach thread to one free point between joinings, ch 4 (to count as tr), 2 tr in same place, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook, and complete as for a cluster; ch 4, 3-tr cluster in same place, ch 4, * in next point between joinings make two 3-tr clusters, with ch-4 between clusters; ch 4. Repeat from * 2 more times. Join last ch-4 with sl st to tip of first cluster made. 2nd rnd: Sl st in each st to center of ch between clusters, s c in same loop, ch 3, * s c in next ch-4 loop, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 with sl st to 1st s c made. Fasten and break off. Fill in all spaces between motifs in this manner.

EDGING … Attach thread to 1st loop to the left of joining, 3 s c in same loop, * ch 3, 3 s c in next loop; then, in loop between clusters, make: s c, ch 5, 2 s c, ch 5, 2 s c, ch 5, s c; 3 s c in next loop. Repeat from * to within last loop from joining. Ch 3, 3 s c in next loop. Repeat from 2 more times, and continue in this manner around. Fasten and break off.

CENTERPIECE No. 7171-B

When completed, centerpiece measures about 20 inches in diameter.

Make 19 motifs as for Runner 7171-A. Place 6 motifs around a center motif, and sew 2 points of each motif to corresponding 2 points of center motif. Sew the 2 adjacent points of each of the 6 motifs together, but do not leave any points free between joinings at inner edge (6 free points on each motif, at outer edge). Place the remaining 12 motifs around outer edge of previous rnd of motifs, and sew 2 points (counting to the left of joining) of one motif to 2 points of motif of previous rnd. Then sew the next 2 points to the adjacent 2 points of motif, counting to the right of joining. Join the following 2 points to adjacent 2 points of next motif on 2nd rnd. Continue in this manner around, thus leaving 4 points free on every alternate motif, and 6 points free on remaining motifs.

EDGING … Make edging as for Runner 7171-A.
