Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 5 balls of White and 1 ball of color 70 Blue Jewel; or Clark's O.N.T. Knit-Crochet, 15 balls of White and 3 balls of color. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 4 or 5.

Place Mats: With White, ch 9. Join with sl st to form ring, ch 3. (Rows are worked as semi-circles.) 1st row: 16 d c into ring, ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip 1 st, 2 d c into next st, ch 1, 2 d c in same st. (This make a shell st.) * Skip 2 sts, shell st, and repeat from * 3 more times. D c into 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * 2 d c over ch-1 loop, ch 1, 2 d c in same sp, ch 2, and repeat from * 4 more times. At end of row omit ch 2, and d c into 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: * 2 d c over next ch-1 loop, ch 1, 2 d c in same sp, ch 1, 2 d c over ch-2 loop, ch 1, and repeat from * 3 more times. Shell over shell, d c into 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: * Shell over shell, ch 1, 2 d c over ch-1 loop, ch 1, 2 d c over next ch-1 loop, ch 1, and repeat from * 3 more times. Shell over shell. D c into 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 6th to 8th rows incl: Same as 5th row, making 2 d c's over additional ch-1 loops. 9th row: Shell over shell, ch 2, skip next sp and * d c over next ch-1 sp, ch 2, repeat from * 4 more times. Shell over shell, ch 2. Make d c with ch 2 between over 1st 5 sps, shell over shell, skip next sp, and reverse design, ending with shell over shell. D c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 10th row: Same as 9th, but do not skip sps. 11th, 12th and 13th rows: Follow pattern as for 5th row. Repeat pattern of 9th to 13th rows incl. 4 more times, making the final row solid d c's. Work this row d c over d c, d c over sp, and shell over shell. Fasten off.

Border: Attach Blue Jewel to 1st loop along top edge of mat. Ch 3 and d c into same sp. 2 d c into each sp across, ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c over d c, ch 3, turn. 3rd row: same as 2nd row. 4th row: D c into next st, * ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c into each of next 2 d c, and repeat from * across. Fasten off. Attach White to same loop to which Blue Jewel was first attached. Work 2 s c over each d c across end, ch 3, d c over 1st sp in 4th row, * ch 1, 2 dc over next sp, and repeat from * across. At end of row, ch 3, and work 2 s c over each d c across end. Next row: S c over s c across end, and over the ch 3 of the previous row. Ch 3, and work a close row of d c along edge. Ch 3, s c over each s c across end. Fasten off at 1st row of Blue Jewel. Make 3 more mats.

Center Mat: With Blue Jewel make ch as long as top edge of mat, then ch 15. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, and d c in each st of foundation ch until row measures same as top edge of mat. (Any extra sts of ch may be cut off later.) Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c over next d c, * ch 1, skip 1 d c, d c in each of next 2 d c's and repeat from * across. 3rd row: Ch 3 (to count as d c) turn. Make 2 d c over each sp with ch 1 between each group of 2 d c's. Break off and attach at beginning of foundation ch. Ch 3. Work a row of d c's opposite each d c of 1st row and repeat 2nd and 3rd rows. Break off. Attach White to one side of center strip. 4th, 5th and 6th rows: Ch 3 (to count as d c) and work as for 3rd row. Ch 3, turn. 7th and 8th rows: D c over next sp, * ch 2, d c over next sp, and repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. The 4th to 8th rows incl. complete the pattern. Repeat this pattern 5 more times and finish edge with 2 rows the same as the 1st 2 pattern rows. Fasten off and repeat for other side of mat.

Edge: Attach White on one side, ch 3. Work a close row of d c's around the entire mat, making d c over d c and d c over sp along each side and 2 d c over each d c loop across the ends. At the corners work enough d c's so that the mat will lie flat.
