MATERIALS … Choose one of the following threads in size 10, White or Ecru:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 27 balls.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 19 balls.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, 11 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.

This material is sufficient for a set to serve four. Set consists of a centerpiece—18¾ inches in diameter; 4 plate doilies—12 inches; 4 bread and butter plate doilies—7½ inches; and 4 glass doilies—6 inches.

CENTERPIECE … Starting at center, ch 8, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 20 s c in ring. Join with sl st to 1st s c made. 2nd rnd: Ch 5 (to count as d c and ch-2), * skip 1 s c, d c in next s c, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-5 first made (10 sps). 3rd rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 8 (to count as d c and ch-5), * d c in next sp, ch 5. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-8 first made. 4th rnd: In each ch-5 sp around make: s c, half d c, 3 d c, half d c, s c. Join with sl st to 1st s c made (10 scallops). 5th rnd: Ch 10 (to count as d c and ch-7); * d c between next 2 scallops, ch 7. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-10 first made. 6th rnd: In each loop around make: s c, half d c, 7 d c, half d c, s c. Join. 7th rnd: Ch 13 (to count as d c and ch-10), * d c between next 2 scallops, ch 10. Repeat from * around. Join. 8th rnd: In each loop around make: s c, half d c, 10 d c, half d c, s c. Join. 9th rnd: Ch 5 (to count as d c and ch-2), * skip 1st 3 sts of next scallop, s c in each of next 8 d c, ch 2, skip next 3 sts, d c between scallops, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join to 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 10th rnd: Ch 4 (to count as s c and ch-3), * skip next s c, s c in each of next 7 s c, ch 3, s c in next d c, ch 3. Repeat from * around. Join to 1st st of ch-4 first made. 11th rnd: Ch 5 (to count as s c and ch-4), skip next s c, * s c in each of remaining 6 s c, ch 4, skip next sp, s c in next s c, ch 4, skip next sp and following s c. Repeat from * around. Join. 12th to 15th rnds incl: Work as for 11th rnd, decreasing 1st s c of each s c-section and increasing 1 ch in each ch-section (2 s c and 8 ch on 15th rnd). Join. 16th rnd: Ch 11, * skip next ch-8 and 1st s c of 2 s c-group, d c in next s c, ch 8, skip next ch-8, d c in next s c, ch 8. Repeat from * around. Join. 17th to 26th rnds incl: Repeat 6th to 15th rnds incl. 27th and 28th rnds: Repeat 16th and 6th rnds. 29th rnd: Ch 12 (to count as d tr and ch-7), * d tr between next 2 scallops, ch 7. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 5th ch of ch-12 first made. 30th rnd: same as 6th rnd. 31st and 32nd rnds: Repeat 29th and 8th rnds. 33rd rnd: Ch 15 (to count as d tr and ch-10), * d tr between next 2 scallops, ch 10. Repeat from * around, join. 34th rnd: Same as 8th rnd. 35th to 41st rnds incl: Repeat 9th to 15th rnds incl. 42nd and 43rd rnds: Repeat 16th and 8th rnds. Do not break off, but make spokes as follows:

FIRST SPOKE … 1st row: Sl st across to 6th st of next scallop, s c in next st, ch 25, turn. 2nd row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across, sl st at base of foundation ch-25. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: S c in each of 1st 4 s c, * ch 5, s c in each of next 4 s c. Repeat from * across, ending with s c in next st of scallop (five ch-5 loops). Ch 7, s c in 7th st of next scallop.

SECOND SPOKE … 1st row: Ch 24, drop loop from hook, insert hook in 3rd (center) ch-5 loop, turn. 2nd row: S c in each of 24 ch just made, sl st at base of ch-24, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: Same as 3rd and 4th rows of first spoke. Continue making spokes, as for second spoke, all around to within last spoke.

LAST SPOKE … 1st, 2nd and 3rd rows: Same as for previous spokes. 4th row: S c in each of 1st 4 s c, ch 5, s c in each of next 4 s c, ch 5, s c in each of next 4 s c, ch 2, sl st in turning ch-2 at tip of 1st row of first spoke, ch 2, s c in each of next 4 s c on last spoke, and complete as for 4th row of previous spokes. Ch 8, join with sl st to base of first spoke made. Fasten and break off.

PLATE DOILY … Work as for centerpiece to 27th rnd incl. 28th rnd: Repeat 8th rnd of centerpiece. Then work spokes all around as for centerpiece. Fasten and break off.

BREAD AND BUTTER PLATE DOILY … Work as for centerpiece to 16th rnd incl. 17th rnd: Repeat 8th rnd of centerpiece. Then work spokes all around as for centerpiece.

GLASS DOILY … Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 6 (to count as d c and ch-3), * dc in ring, ch 3. Repeat from * 3 more times. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-6 first made. 2nd rnd: In each ch-3 sp around make: s c, half d c, 3 d c, half d c, s c. Join with sl st to s c first made (5 scallops made). 3rd rnd: Ch 9 (to count as s c and ch-8), * s c between next 2 scallops, ch 8. Repeat from * around. Join to 1st st of ch-9 first made. 4th rnd: In each loop around make: s c, half d c, 10 d c, half d c, s c. Join. 5th rnd: Ch 5 (to count as d c and ch-2), * skip 1st 3 sts of next scallop, s c in each of next 8 d c, ch 2, d c between next 2 scallops, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join with s c in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Work over s c-groups as for previous doilies, but dec. 2 sts (1st and last s c) in each group, and inc. 2 ch in each section (2 s c and 8 ch on 8th rnd). Join. 92h rnd: * Ch 10, skip next ch-8, s c between 2 s c of next group, ch 10, skip next ch-8, s c in next s c. Repeat from * around, join. 10th rnd: In each loop around make: s c, half d c, 10 d c, half d c, s c. Join. Then work spokes as for centerpiece, but make ch-10 (instead of ch-7) between spokes, and join spokes at 4th loop made on each spoke (instead of center loop). Fasten and break off.
