The * is used in repeating – 'repeat from *' – means to repeat everything that follows the last *.
Chain = ch; Stitch = st; Double Crochet = dc.

This pattern (complete in 1 sheet) contains directions and a chart for making a filet crochet panel of the Lord's Prayer in Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton. Both the Protestant and Catholic versions are given.

GAUGE
BEFORE STARTING PANEL, IT IS ADVISABLE TO MAKE A SAMPLE PIECE TO INSURE THE CORRECT GAUGE (NUMBER OF STITCHES AND ROWS TO THE INCH). UNLESS GAUGE IS PERFECT, PANEL WILL NOT BE THE SIZE GIVEN.
4 spaces = 1 inch; 4 rows = 1 inch

PROTESTANT VERSION

1ST ROW: Ch 375, 1 dc in 4th st from hook, 1 dc in each of next 11 sts, * ch 2, skip next 2 sts, 1 dc in each of next 13 sts; repeat from* across chain; there are 25 (13 dc) groups in row.

2ND ROW: Ch 3, turn, skip first dc on last row, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc (this forms a space; see chart), 2 more spaces, * 2 dc in next (ch 2) space, 1 dc in next dc (this 4 dc group forms a block; see chart), 4 spaces; repeat from * across row, end with a block, 2 spaces, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 1 dc in top st of turning ch of last row.

3RD ROW: Ch 3, turn, skip first dc, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in next dc, 2 more spaces, ch 2, skip 2 dc, 1 dc in next dc; continue to work spaces across, end with ch 2, 1 dc in each of next 3 dc, 1 dc in top st of turning ch.

6TH ROW: Ch 3, turn, 2 dc in first space, 1 dc in next dc; follow chart (from left to right) across, working a space for each open (black) square and a block for each solid (white) square on chart, (4 dc worked side by side form a block; when 2 or more blocks follow consecutively, work 3 dc for each and one extra dc at end, end row with 2 dc in turning ch space, 1 dc in 3rd st of same turning ch.

Continue to follow chart back and forth to end of last row; cut thread.

 

THE CATHOLIC VERSION

Follow directions for first 6 rows of The Protestant Version. Continue to follow chart to end of 20th row.
Skip next 16 rows on chart and continue to follow chart back and forth from next row (A on Chart) to end of last row; cut thread.

 

BLOCKING
Stretch and pin panel to the correct size and shape on a padded surface; cover with a damp cloth; press with a hot iron. Remove when dry.

FINISHING
The wall panel can either be framed or hung from a rod. If the panel is to be framed, it must have an under-mat of a dark color (black, brown, deep red or dark blue) to bring out the design. Or, panel can be mounted on dark-colored felt, sateen or velvet and hung from a rod.
