MATERIALS … Clark’s Big Ball Mercerized Crochet, size 20, White or Ecru, 52 balls for double size spread, or 46 balls for single size spread.

Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10.

GAUGE: 5 sps make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch. Directions are given for double size spread, 90 x 108 inches. For a single size spread, 72 x 108 inches, work top as for double size spread, omitting area designated between "O"—"O," and working sides exactly the same as for double size spread.

TOP … Starting at bottom of chart "A" make a chain about 2½ yds. long. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across until there are 811 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c. (For your convenience in counting, mark off each 50 d c with a colored thread.) Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each of next 3 d c (1 bl made), * ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c (1 sp made). Repeat from * across (268 sps), ending row with d c in each of last 4 d c. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 1 bl, 1 sp, 4 bls, 6 sps, 4 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 22 sps, 8 bls, 19 sps, 6 bls, 19 sps, 8 bls, 30 sps, 6 bls, 30 sps, 8 bls, 19 sps, 6 bls, 19 sps, 8 bls, 22 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 4 bls, 6 sps, 4 bls, 1 sp, 1 bl. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: 1 bl, 1 sp, 5 bls, 4 sps, 10 bls, 19 sps, 9 bls, 15 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 8 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 15 sps, 9 bls, 23 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 8 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 23 sps, 9 bls, 15 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 8 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 15 sps, 9 bls, 19 sps, 10 bls, 4 sps, 5 bls, 1 sp, 1 bl. Ch 3, turn. Hereafter follow chart "A" starting at 5th row from bottom. The chart shows ½ of design. To make second half of each row, repeat first half, starting from center and working back. When last row of chart "A" is completed, follow chart "B" working any 2 initials desired in area indicated within center medallion. When last row of chart "B" is completed, follow chart "C" until design is completed. Break off.

SIDE PIECE (Make 2) … Starting at bottom of chart "A" (from "X" to "X") make a chain to measure 1 yd. long. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch until there are 271 d c, counting turning ch as 1 d c. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in each of next 3 d c, * ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in next d c. Repeat from * until 89 sps are made. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: 15 sps, 6 bls, 19 sps, 8 bls, 22 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 4 bls, 6 sps, 4 bls, 1 sp, 1 bl. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: 1 bl, 1 sp, 5 bls, 4 sps, 10 bls, 19 sps, 9 bls, 15 sps, 3 bls, 1 sp, 8 bls, 1 sp, 3 bls, 10 sps. Ch 5, turn. Hereafter follow chart "A" working only the area designated between "X"—"X." When last row of chart "A" is completed, follow chart "B" and then chart "C" keeping width of piece uniform until last row of chart "C" is completed. Break off.

   Sew side pieces to top, keeping borders on sides at outer edges.
