MATERIALS … J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 39 balls of a light color and 28 balls of a dark color for a double size spread; 31 balls of a light color and 24 balls of a dark color for a single size spread. (If desired, two shades of one color may be used.)

GAUGE: Each large motif measures about 4½ inches in diameter. For a double size spread, 90 x 108 inches, make 20 x 24 motifs. For a single size spread, 72 x 108 inches, make 16 x 24 motifs.
FIRST MOTIF … Starting at center, with dark color ch 10 and join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), 23 d c in ring. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as sl st, ch 3, 2 d c in same place, * ch 1, skip 2 d c; in next d c make 2 d c, ch 3, 2 d c. Repeat from * around. Join last d c with s c to 3rd st of ch-3 first made (8 groups in all). 3rd rnd: * 9 d c in ch-3 sp, s c in ch-1 sp. Repeat from * around (8 shells). Fasten and break off. 4th rnd: Attach light color to center of next shell, * ch 11, s c in center d c of next shell. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-11 with sl st in center d c of 1st shell. 5th rnd: * Ch 4, skip 2 ch, s c in next st. Repeat from * around (32 ch-4 loops in all). 6th, 7th and 8th rnds: Sl st to center of next loop, * ch 4, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join. 9th rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, s c in same loop, * 9 d c in next loop, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
SECOND MOTIF … Work as for first motif to 8th rnd incl. 9th rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, s c in same loop, 9 d c in next loop, s c in next loop, 4 d c in next loop, insert hook in 5th d c of a shell on first motif, 5 d c back in second motif (to complete shell), s c in next loop of same motif, 4 d c in next loop, insert hook in 5th d c of next shell on first motif, 5 d c back in second motif (to complete shell). Complete this rnd as for first motif, with no more joinings. Break off.
THIRD MOTIF … Join this motif to first motif in exactly the same way, leaving 2 shells free between motifs.
FOURTH MOTIF … Join this motif to second and third motifs in same way, leaving 2 shells free between motifs.
Make necessary number of motifs, joining each motif as before. Then make fill-in motifs in all spaces between joinings, as follows:
FILL-IN MOTIF … With dark color, work as for first 3 rnds of first motif, but on the 3rd rnd join to large motifs in same way as large motifs were joined.
