Kitten and Bunny Rug Pattern

An interesting combination of simple stitches that form into rectangular shaped puffs. From the directions given, designs are formed into interesting rugs, mats for the table, chair seats, hot pot holders, hot plate mats, etc. Crocheted of Enterprise Yarn it makes firm, heavy rugs or mats that will last for years.

Each square on the chart is a Puff Stitch—symbols indicate the colors in Enterprise Yarn that form the stripes and designs. Nursery Rhymes or Comic Characters may be copied—traced onto the kind of cross section paper used by high school students. Simple cross stitch embroidery motifs work up into beautiful rugs and mats in Puff Stitch.

Measurements and Materials:
Firmly crocheted—30 Puffs = 1 foot (5 Puffs = 2 inches).
25 rows of Puffs = 1 foot. (Approximately 2 rows = 1 inch.)
Each square foot of crochet—(approximately 750 Puffs) will require approximately 2¼—125-yard balls of Enterprise Yarn (about 330 Puffs to the ball).

Puff Stitch Crochet follows the same procedure, row after row, to make any article. It is only necessary to change colors to insert the pattern at the point shown in the chart. Colors needed to work back in the next row should be dropped and left hanging when starting a new color for the design. As many as 3 or 4 balls, hanging, can be handled without confusion, possibly more. Break thread and rejoin if more are needed.

The Kitten and Bunny Rug shown has Lt. Blue background (9 Balls) —Ivory for the design (3 Balls)—and Dk. Blue for border and accents (2 Balls). Background and trim may be changed to Pink, Rose or Green as wanted, to match a color scheme. Size 52 puffs wide, 94 puffs long (approx. 21" x 45").
If size is to be changed add or deduct 2 ch on starting chain for each Puff Stitch changed. The Instructions below show rows of puff-stitch thru the border and stripes at one end of the rug, and the change to Ivory for the start of the design at the bunny's tail.

With Dk. Blue, ch 106. Skip last st, 105 sc on chain.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in last sc, * 2 dc in next sc, holding the final loop of each dc on hook, thread over and pull thru all 3 loops on hook at once (1 puff st made), sc in next sc, pulling it down tight,—letting the puff st puff out on back of work, which will be the right side of rug. Repeat from * across (52 puffs).
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in last sc, (sc in next puff, sc in next sc) repeat across (105 sc). (Repeat rows 2 and 3 twice with Dk. Blue and once with Ivory) twice, completing border (7 puff rows), then repeat 7 times with Lt. Blue.
Puff Row 15: Make 16 puffs in Lt. Blue. Then in the sc following final puff, hold the 2 loops of it on hook, drop Lt. Blue, and draw loop of Ivory thru the 2 loops, completing sc. Each color in turn is joined in this way,—thru the sc following puff. This will not be mentioned again. Working over starting end of Ivory make 3 puffs in Ivory, join a second ball of Lt. Blue, drop Ivory and make 33 puffs in Lt. Blue. Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in Lt. Blue in each Blue st, drop Blue, with Ivory make 1 sc in each Ivory Stitch, drop Ivory, draw up first ball of Lt. Blue and make 1 sc in each st to end of row (105 sc). Make all following sc rows in same way,—changing exactly above changes in previous puff row. In puff rows, be careful not to drop or skip stitches. Puffs should be in even rows lengthwise of rug, exactly above the puffs in previous puff rows.

From this point to the end of the rug follow the cross section layout, which shows each puff stitch in each row, by color symbols for the balance of the rug. I.e., Row 16 has 15 puffs in Lt. Blue, then 5 puffs in Ivory, and 32 puffs in Lt. Blue to finish the row.

Complete rug with a row of sc following final (No. 94) puff row. Finish sides with a row of sc in Dk. Blue, putting 2 sc in end of each puff row.
