Climbing Rose Tablecloth Pattern #7065

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (34 balls) or J. & P. Coats (28 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 20, White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10.
5 yds. of 36-inch width linen.

When completed, tablecloth measures about 60 x 68 inches, and 8 napkins each about 15½ inches square. Strips of lace are made, and then flowers are made and appliquéd. Cut strips of linen, being sure to cut on straight of goods (not bias), each 4½ inches wide and according to length specified on Diagram B. Make a ¼ inch hem on long sides of long linen strips and along all edges of No. 1 and No. 11 corner pieces. Cut a piece of paper measuring about 60½ x 68 inches. Pin each linen strip in place on paper as in Diagram A. Now trim short ends of linen strips leaving ¼ inch for hem. Remove from paper and hem edges.

First Lace Strip. Starting at short end, ch 83 (to measure about 6½ inches), turn. 1st row: 1 d tr in 10th ch from hook, 1 d tr in next ch, * ch 5, skip 4 ch, 1 d tr in each of next 2 ch. Repeat from * across (12 sps and ½ sp). Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: * S c in each of next 2 d tr, ch 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with 1 s c in each of last 2 d tr. Ch 8, turn. 3rd row: Skip 1st 2 s c and ch-5, * make 1 d tr in each of next 2 s c, ch 5. Repeat from * across, ending row with 1 d tr in each of last 2 s c. Then, ch 10, make 1 d tr in same place as d tr just made. Ch 4, turn (11 sps and ½ sp on each end). 4th row: S c in each of 4th and 5th sts of ch-10, * ch 5, s c in each of next 2 s c. Repeat from * across, ending row with 1 s c in each of last 2 d tr. Ch 8, turn. These last 2 rows constitute the pattern. Repeat these 2 rows until lace strip measures 14½ inches along 1 edge, ending with the d tr-row and omitting the last ch-10 and the last d tr. Then, ch 2, turn. To decrease, work as follows: Next row: S c in each of 1st 2 d tr, * ch 5, s c in each of next 2 d tr. Repeat from * across, ending row as usual. Ch 8, turn. Following row: Work as for 3rd row, ending row with 1 d tr in each of last 2 d tr. Ch 2, turn. Repeat these last 2 rows until only the ½-sp remains. Break off. This completes the 1st lace strip. Make remaining strips to correspond, following measurements on Diagram A. Sew lace strips and linen strips alternately in position, inconspicuously.

Appliquéd Flowers.

Flower: Starting at center, ch 7, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 5 (to count as tr and ch-1), make 19 tr with ch-1 between each tr. Join last ch-1 with sl st to 4th st of ch-5 first made. 2nd rnd: Make s c in each tr and in each ch-1 sp (39 s c). 3rd rnd: * Ch 3, tr in each of next 3 s c, ch 3, s c in next s c (1 petal made). Repeat from * around (10 petals in all). Break off. Leaf: Starting along center, ch 25, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and s c in next ch, 1 half d c in next ch, d c in each of next 5 ch, d tr in each of next 8 ch, d c in each of next 5 ch, 1 half d c in next ch, d c in each of last 2 ch, ch 3, turn. Repeat this row on other side of foundation ch. Break off. Make 3 more leaves. This completes 1 group. Make 40 groups and sew to lace strips as in Diagram A.

Napkins. Cut linen into eight 16-inch squares, as in Diagram B. Make a narrow hem all around.
