Patrician Tablecloth Pattern #7278

MATERIALS:
CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BIG BALL BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 50, 98 balls of White or Ecru.
MILWARD'S Steel Crochet Hook No. 11 or 12.

GAUGE … 6 sps make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch. Completed tablecloth measures about 92 x 108 inches.

Starting at bottom of chart, make a chain 3 yds. long (18 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Repeat from * until 543 sps are made. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 5, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: D c in next d c, ch 2, d c in next d c (2 sps made over 2 sps). Continue to make sp over sp across. Ch 5, turn. 5th row: 6 sps, d c in next 2 ch, d c in next d c—bl made over sp; make 2 sps, (d c in next 2 ch, d c in next d c) 5 times—5 bls made over 5 sps. * 2 sps, 1 bl, 9 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps, 5 bls. Repeat from * across until 27 groups in all of 5 bls are made; then make 2 sps, 1 bl, 6 sps. Ch 5, turn.
Now follow chart for detail of design, starting at the 6th row and working to the 19th row incl. (one strip of cross designs completed). Continue to work in pattern over the first and last crosses, making spaces between, until 44 rows in all are made.
45th row: 6 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps, 5 bls, 2 sps, 1 bl, 49 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps, 5 bls; * 2 sps, 1 bl, 9 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps, 5 bls. Repeat from * across until 21 groups in all of 5 bls are made in center section; then make 2 sps, 1 bl, 49 sps, 1 bl, 2 sps, 5 bls, 2 sps, 1 bl, 6 sps (thus another strip of crosses is begun). Ch 5, turn. 46th row: 5 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 5 bls, 3 sps, 1 bl, 47 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 5 bls, * 3 sps, 1 bl, 7 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 5 bls. Repeat from * across the center 21 crosses (ending with 5 bls, 3 sps, 1 bl). Then make 47 sps, 1 bl, 3 sps, 5 bls, 3 sps, 1 bl, 5 sps. Ch 5, turn. Continue in pattern over 21 center crosses and over both end crosses until these 21 crosses are completed.
Continue, working in cross pattern over both end crosses as before, and also continuing to work cross over both end crosses of the 21 just completed, for 25 rows as before (make spaces between crosses).
Then, keeping continuity of these 2 cross designs at each end, work another group of 15 crosses in center of cloth (always 49 sps between end cross designs on beginning row of cross).
Continue in this manner (always keeping continuity of end designs of each strip of crosses) until 5 strips of crosses are completed. There will be 9 designs in center of 4th strip, and 3 designs on fifth strip. Now keep continuity of end crosses of 5th strip also, until 8 crosses in all are worked vertically in center section. Work 3 more rows in usual pattern. Mark the last row worked with a colored thread—this is exactly one half of tablecloth.
Continue, making other half of cloth to correspond exactly with half just completed, following filet pattern backwards to 1st row, but do not repeat last row marked with colored thread. Do not fasten off.

EDGING … In corner sp make s c, half d c, 2 d c, half d c and s c; * 2 s c in next sp; in next sp make s c, half d c, 2 d c, half d c and s c. Repeat from * around all four sides. Join and fasten off. Block cloth to measurements given.
