Sacred Heart Bookmark Pattern #9045

About 160 yds. of thread are required to make one bookmark.

MATERIALS:
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 30, White.
Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Six Strand, 1 skein each of Dk. Cardinal, Gold and Black.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12.

Starting at one end, ch 16 to measure ⅞ inch. 1st row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, * thread over and draw loop through; retaining these loops on hook, insert hook in next ch. Repeat from * across (16 loops on hook). 2nd row: Thread over and draw through 1 loop, * thread over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * until 1 loop remains (this loop counts as 1st stitch of next row). 3rd row: Insert hook under 2nd vertical bar, thread over and draw loop through; retaining these loops on hook, pick up a loop in each vertical bar across to within last st; then insert hook through 2 vertical bars of last st and draw loop through (thus giving a firm edge to this side of work). Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately until piece measures 5¾ inches, ending with 2nd row. Work a row of sl st across. Fasten off.

FRINGE … Cut 4 strands of thread, each 2 inches long. Double these strands, forming a loop. Pull loop through 1st stitch at one end, and draw loose ends of fringe through this loop. Pull tight. Make fringe in every other stitch across both short ends. Trim ends evenly.

EMBROIDERY … With 3 strands of Dk. Cardinal work Sacred Heart in short and long stitch. With 3 strands of Gold work flame in same way. With 1 strand of Black make a Cross in center of flames, and thorns on heart in outline stitch. Then, with 1 strand of Black, work in outline stitch the words—Sacred Heart of Jesus I trust in Thee (see illustration).
