LUNCHEON SET No. 7160-A

The amount of material specified for luncheon set is sufficient for 4 place mats, each about 11 x 19 inches, and a center mat about 22 inches square.

PLACE MATS (Make 4) … Starting at one short end of center section, ch 7 (to count as ch-1 and 1st tr of cluster). 1st row: * 2 tr in 6th ch from hook, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all 3 loops (a 3-tr cluster made). Ch 7, do not turn. Repeat from * until 33 clusters are completed. Ch 7, turn. 2nd row: Tr in ch-1 between 2nd and 3rd clusters from hook * ch 9, tr in next ch-1 between clusters, ch 9, tr in next ch-1 between clusters, ch 6, 3-tr cluster between next 2 clusters, ch 7, tr in next ch-1 between clusters. Repeat from * across, ending with cluster in 1st ch made. Ch 6, turn. 3rd row: Cluster in 6th ch from hook, * ch 11, skip ch-6 loop, s c in 5th ch of next ch-9 loop, ch 9, s c in 5th ch of next ch-9 loop, ch 11, cluster in tip of next cluster. Repeat from * across. Ch 6, turn. 4th row: Cluster in 6th ch from hook, * ch 11, skip 6 ch of next ch-11 loop; tr in next ch, holding back the last loop of tr on hook; tr in 5th ch of next ch-9 loop, holding back the last loop on hook; thread over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Ch 9, tr in same place as last tr, holding back the last loop of tr on hook; tr in 5th ch of next ch-11 loop, holding back the last loop on hook; thread over and draw through all 3 loops; ch 11, cluster in tip of next cluster. Repeat from * across. Ch 6, turn. 5th row: Cluster in 6th ch from hook, * ch 6, cluster in 6th ch from hook, skip 6 ch of ch-11 loop, tr in next ch, ch 6, cluster in 6th ch from hook, tr in 5th ch of next ch-9 loop, ch 6, cluster in 6th ch from hook, tr in 5th ch of next ch-11, ch 6, cluster in 6th ch from hook, cluster in tip of next cluster. Repeat from * across (8 squares). Ch 6, turn. 6th row: Cluster in 6th ch from hook, ch 6, tr in next tr between clusters, * ch 9, tr in next tr between clusters. Repeat from * once more, ch 6, cluster over next vertical cluster of previous row, ch 6. Repeat from across, turn. The last 4 rows (3rd to 6th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until 7 rows of squares are completed, ending with 5th row. Fasten and break off.

CLONES KNOT FLOWERS … Ch 1 loosely (this st will be referred to as center st); ch 5 tightly, then make a Clones knot as follows: * Thread over hook, pass hook under ch-5, thread over and draw loop forward. Repeat from * 7 more times, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten, s c around ch at base of knot (this completes a Clones knot), sl st in center st. ** Ch 5 and make a Clones knot, sl st in center st. Repeat from ** 2 more times. Fasten and break off, leaving a 10-inch length of thread for sewing. Sew flower to center of one square, having a Clones knot in each small square at center (see illustration). Finish all other squares in same way.

SUNBURST ENDS1st row: With wrong side of work toward you, attach thread between 15th and 16th clusters on last row of center section, ch 7, tr between 16th and 17th clusters, ch 8, tr in same place as last tr, ch 7, s c between 17th and 18th clusters. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 7 s c in ch-7 loop, s c in tr, 8 s c in ch-8 loop, s c in tr, 7 s c in next loop; sl st in same place where thread was joined, ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * Skip 1st s c, tr in next s c, ch 3. Repeat from * 11 more times, sl st in tr between next 2 clusters. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: * In ch-3 sp make 1 half d c, 3 d c, 1 half d c; s c in tr. Repeat from * across (13 scallops), sl st between clusters where last row started, ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters, ch 5, turn. 5th row: Tr in s c (between scallops), * ch 5, tr in next s c (between scallops). Repeat from * across, ch 5, sl st in tr between next 2 clusters, ch 6, sl st in next vertical cluster of center section, turn. 6th row: ** 5 tr in ch-5 sp, tr in next tr, ch 6, s c in 5th ch from hook (a p made), * ch 5, s c in 5th ch from hook. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 4, make 4 ch-5 p's, ch 2, sl st in last tr made. Repeat from ** across, ending with 5 tr in last ch-5 sp, sl st in next vertical cluster of center section, ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters; ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters. Ch 10, turn. 7th row: * S c in center of next p-loop, ch 10. Repeat from * across, joining last ch-10 with sl st between 2nd and 3rd clusters, counting from tr-row. Ch 3, turn. 8th row: 10 d c in ch-10 sp. Ch 3, turn. D c in each of 9 d c, d c in turning ch-3. Ch 3, turn. D c in each of 9 d c, ch 3, turn. D c in each of 8 d c, d c in top of ch-3. Ch 3, turn. * Dc in each d c across (omitting turning ch). Ch 3, turn. Repeat from * until 1 d c and turning ch-3 remain. Fasten and break off, leaving a 2-inch length of thread (this completes 1 point). Attach thread to top of last d c of 1st row of point, d c in next s c; make 10 d c in next ch-10 sp, and work as for first point. Continue in this manner across (13 points). 9th row: With wrong side of work toward you, attach thread between 4th and 5th clusters from outer edge of center section, ch 18, * s c in tip of next point, ch 18. Repeat from * across, joining last ch-18 with sl st between 4th and 5th clusters from outer edge. Ch 1, turn. 10th row: * In ch-18 sp make 1 half d c, 5 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c, 1 half d c, 5 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c, 1 half d c, 5 d c and 1 half d c; s c in next s c (3 scallops). Repeat from * across, ending with sl st where thread was joined on previous row. Ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters. Ch 7, turn. 11th row: S c in 5th ch from hook, ch 3, tr between 1st and 2nd scallops, * ch 7, make a p as before, ch 3, s c between this and next scallop. Repeat from * across, ending with p, ch 3, sl st in tr between next 2 clusters (42 sps). Ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters. Ch 7, turn. 12th row: * Make a p, ch 3, tr in next tr, ch 7. Repeat from * across, ending with p, ch 3, sl st in next tr between clusters, ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters. Ch 7, turn. 13th row: Same as 12th row, ending with ch 6, sl st in next tr between clusters, ch 6, sl st in tip of last cluster of center section. Ch 6, turn. 14th row: * Cluster in 6th ch from hook, ch 1, tr in next tr, ch 6. Repeat from * across, joining last ch-1 with sl st to last cluster of center section. Fasten and break off. Work opposite end to correspond.

EDGING … Attach thread to tr between any 2 clusters, ch 12 (to count as d c and ch-9), * make a Clones knot, sl st in 3rd ch of ch-9, ch 3, d c in next tr between clusters, ch 9. Repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 with sl st to 3rd st of ch-12 first made. Break off. This completes one place mat.
