Beaded Tote Bag

This Tote Bag and Cloche can be made with:

AUNT LYDIA'S” HEAVY RUG YARN, Article 235
5 skeins Beige or color desired for bag.
2 skeins for hat.
260 small wooden beads.
Aluminum crochet hook size G or size H.

TOTE BAG

Ch 24 to measure about 7 inches, 3 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 21 sts of ch, 3 s c in last st, working on opposite side of ch work 1 s c in each of the next 21 sts, do not join this or the following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.

2nd Round. 2 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c.

3rd Round. * 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c, * 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c.

4th Round. 1 s c in each s c on sides increasing 3 s c evenly spaced around each end. Repeat the last round twice.

7th Round. Working through back loop of sts only, work 1 s c in each s c increasing 3 s c evenly spaced around each end.

8th Round. Working through both loops of sts work 1 s c in each s c (84 s c).

Repeat the last round once, sl st in next st.

10th Round. Ch 2 and holding all loops on hook, draw up a loop in 2nd st from hook, draw up a loop in same space with sl st, draw up a loop in each of the next 2 s c (5 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all loops at one time, ch 1 (the ch 1 is termed the eye of the star st), * draw up a loop in eye of star st just made, draw up a loop in side loop of same star st and in each of the next 2 s c, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops at one time, ch 1, repeat from * all around, join (42 star sts).

11th Round. Ch 1 and work 1 s c in eye and 1 s c in loop of each star st (84 s c), join.

12th and 13th Rounds. Same as 10th and 11th rounds. 14th Round. 1 s c in each s c, do not join. Repeat the last round 21 times.

Repeat the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th rounds once.

Next Round. Same as 14th round, then work 9 rounds even in s c, sl st in next 2 sts to even round, cut yarn. Turn under 2 ½ inches at top and sew on inside of bag.

HANDLE: Ch 43, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c, cut yarn leaving an end. Sew long sides together to form a roll. Work another handle in same manner. Sew to inside of bag starting about 2 ½ inches from top. Cut a cardboard about 10 ¼ inches x 4 inches and insert in bottom of bag.

Sew a bead in eye of each star st as illustrated, or with Brown, embroider a French knot in center of each star st.
