Hot Plate Mat and Pot Holder Patterns

An interesting combination of simple stitches that form into rectangular shaped puffs. From the directions given, designs are formed into interesting rugs, mats for the table, chair seats, hot pot holders, hot plate mats, etc. Crocheted of Enterprise Yarn it makes firm, heavy rugs or mats that will last for years.

Each square on the chart is a Puff Stitch—symbols indicate the colors in Enterprise Yarn that form the stripes and designs. Nursery Rhymes or Comic Characters may be copied—traced onto the kind of cross section paper used by high school students. Simple cross stitch embroidery motifs work up into beautiful rugs and mats in Puff Stitch.

Measurements and Materials:
Firmly crocheted—30 Puffs = 1 foot (5 Puffs = 2 inches).
25 rows of Puffs = 1 foot. (Approximately 2 rows = 1 inch.)
Each square foot of crochet—(approximately 750 Puffs) will require approximately 2¼—125-yard balls of Enterprise Yarn (about 330 Puffs to the ball).

Puff Stitch makes an extremely heavy mat that is excellent for table use, to protect from the hottest dishes. Hot Pot Holders, too, in Puff Stitch give ample protection from heat, in the kitchen. Try some of the things you can design so easily in this interesting stitch.

Puff Stitch Crochet follows the same procedure, row after row, to make any article. Make 2 ch for each puff in row, plus 2 ch. Make 1 less sc on ch. I. E.: For 10 Puffs—ch 22, 21 sc on ch. It is only necessary to change colors to insert the pattern at the point shown in the chart. Colors needed to work back in the next row should be dropped and left hanging when starting a new color for the design. As many as 3 or 4 balls, hanging, can be handled without confusion, possibly more. Break thread and rejoin if more are needed.

Try two tone mats or holders—make the starting chain and sc rows in color and all puffs in ivory, white or cream—the effect is striking.

Initials as will make personalized Hot Pot Holders. They are easy to do in Puff Stitch, and make firm, heavy holders for gifts or personal use.

Smaller mats for vegetable dishes, etc., like this, are practical gift and bazaar items. A Hot Pot Holder can be made of the center of this mat design—use the center 15 Puffs and crochet them extra tightly for a heavy holder.

Irregular shapes in table mats, or hot plate mats may be made. With rows of puffs made shorter than previous rows, "steps of stairs" may be formed to make shaped ends or sides. Lay out the design wanted on cross ruled paper—each square on the paper, a puff stitch.

A Table Mat, 25 Puffs wide, 36 Puffs long (10" x 18"), makes a fine mat to use under a hot platter. The background is Ivory with the corners on both ends in pastels. After finishing the sc edge in ivory, another row in sc in light green, then a row in tea rose, dresses up the ends.
