Boudoir Lamp Shades Pattern #7174

MATERIALS … Choose one of the following threads in size 50:

Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White or Ecru, or 4 balls of any color.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 2 balls of White or Ecru, or 3 balls of any color.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, 1 ball of White or Ecru.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 13. 2 lampshade frames (boudoir size). About 15 yds. lampshade tape. 1 yd. dotted Swiss. 4 yds. ribbon, ⅝ inch wide.

This amount of materials is sufficient for 2 lampshades.

BAND … Starting at narrow end, ch 30. 1st row: D c in 8th ch from hook, d c in each of next 6 ch, ch 5, skip 5 ch, d c in each of next 7 ch, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: D c in each of next 5 d c, ch 5, s c in ch-5 sp, ch 5, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch. Ch 5, turn. 3rd row: D c in each of next 3 d c, ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 5, skip 2 d c, d c in each of next 3 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: D c in each of next 3 d c, d c in each of next 2 ch, ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 5, skip 3 ch of next ch-5 loop, d c in each of next 2 ch of same loop, d c in each of next 3 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 5th row: D c in each of next 5 d c, d c in each of first 2 ch of ch-5 loop, ch 5, d c in each of last 2 ch of next ch-5 loop, d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 6th row: D c in each of next 5 d c, ch 9; skip 2 d c, the ch-5 and 2 d c; d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 7th row: D c in each of next 5 d c, ch 4, s c in ch-9 loop, ch 4, d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 8th row: D c in each of 5 d c, ch 9, d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. 9th row: D c in each of next 5 d c, d c in each of next 2 ch, ch 5, d c in each of last 2 ch of ch-9 loop, d c in each of next 5 d c, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of turning ch. Ch 5, turn. The 2nd to 9th rows incl. constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until piece is long enough to fit around upper part of lampshade frame. Break off. Make another band same as this, long enough to fit around lower part of frame.

CROCHETED BALLS (Make 36) … Starting at center, ch 3. 1st rnd: 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: S c in each s c around. 4th rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 5th, 6th and 7th rnds: Same as 3rd rnd. 8th rnd: * S c in next s c, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. Repeat the last rnd until all sts are worked off, stuffing with cotton batting before opening gets too small. Ch 5, fasten and break off.
   Cover frame by winding tape tightly around all wires. Sew all loose ends in place. Cut a strip of dotted Swiss parallel to selvage, 1 inch wider than depth of frame, and join both short ends with French seam. Divide strip equally into same number of sections as on frame, and mark with pins. Pin strip to frame, having marked sections to correspond with sections of frame. Pleat and pin fullness of material securely along upper and lower horizontal wires. Sew pleats securely in place. Fold excess material at top down on outside of frame, and sew in place close to fold. Trim away excess material. Finish lower edge in same manner, folding material upward. Tack pleats in place 1 inch down from upper edge, and 1 inch up from lower edge. Sew ends of crocheted bands together, and sew them in place neatly. Pass ribbon through lace bands, and make bows. Sew balls all around lower edge of frame, spacing them evenly. This completes one lampshade. Make other lampshade to correspond.
   To launder shades, remove ribbons. Wash in mild soap suds, and rinse thoroughly. Dry quickly in sunshine or over radiator, to avoid rusting.
