Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 5 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 3.
1½ yds. velvet ribbon, 1½ inches wide.

Gauge: 2 loops make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Starting at center of back, ch 188 (to measure about 24 inches), turn. 1st row: * Pull loop on hook out ½ inch, thread over, draw through loop, then, ch 1 to fasten (thus a loop st is made), skip 3 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across (47 loops). Make a loop st ¾ inch long, turn. 2nd row: * S c in next loop, make 1 loop st. Repeat from * across. Repeat 2nd row for 2 inches. Break off and lay this piece aside.

Starting at center front, ch 148 (to measure about 19 inches), turn. Work in pattern as before (37 loops in 1st row), increasing 1 loop at one end only every other row (this to be neck edge), until there are 41 loops in row. Then, at neck edge ch 20 (to measure about 2½ inches) and continue to work in pattern across 1st piece, thus joining the 2 pieces. On next row, work in pattern across, making 5 loops over ch-20 at neck edge (93 loops). Work straight until piece measures 4½ inches. Then decrease 1 loop at both ends of next row and every 5th row thereafter until 76 loops remain, then 1 loop at end of every other row until 62 loops remain. Now decrease 1 loop at both ends of each row until 16 loops remain. Break off. Make another piece same as this.

Sew the two pieces together across center back (the longer edge).

Band. Ch 6, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each of next 4 ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until band is long enough to go around lower edge of cape. Then sew in place on wrong side. Sew ribbon around neck edge and tie at front.
