Watermelon Hot Plate Mats and Napkin Holder Pattern

J. & P. COATS "KNIT-CRO-SHEEN," Art. A.64: 5 balls of No. 122 Watermelon and 2 balls each of No. 1 White, No. 49 Chartreuse Green and No. 49-A Killarney; and
COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. SIX STRAND EMBROIDERY FLOSS, Art. C.11: 1 skein of No. 12 Black.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 5 for Hot Plate Mats; No. 6 for Napkin Holder.
A wire napkin holder, 5 inches in diameter; round wire hot plate racks 9 and 11 inches in diameter; oval racks 7¼ x 12½ inches and 10 x 15½ inches.

Use thread double throughout for Hot Plate Mats and single strand for Napkin Holder.

GAUGE: (Double strand) 4 rnds make 1 inch.

LARGE ROUND MAT ... Starting at center with Watermelon, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, 2 dc in same place as sl st, 3 dc in each sc around. Join to top of ch-3. 3rd rnd: 2 sc in same place as sl st (1 sc in­creased), * sc in next 2 dc, 2 sc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, * 2 dc in next sc (1 dc increased), dc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th rnd: Sc in same place as sl st and in each dc around, increasing 7 sc evenly around. Join. 6th rnd: Ch 3, dc in next sc and in each sc around, increasing 14 dc evenly around. Join. 7th to 14th rnds incl: Repeat 5th and 6th rnds, being careful not to have increases directly above increases on previous rnd. Break off. 15th and 16th rnds: Attach White to same place as sl st and work as for 5th and 6th rnds. Break off. 17th and 18th rnds: Attach Chartreuse Green to same place as sl st and work as for 5th rnd. Break off. 19th, 20th and 21st rnds: Attach Kil­larney and work as for 5th rnd. Break off at end of 21st rnd. 22nd rnd: Attach White to same place as sl st, sc in same place, * ch 5, skip next 3 sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 23rd rnd: Sl st to center of next loop, sc in loop, * ch 5, sc in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.
   With Embroidery Floss, embroider seeds on center. With double strand of White, make a chain 36 inches long for tie. Break off. Lace chain through last rnd of loops. Slip Mat over rack and tie ends securely.

SMALL ROUND MAT … Work as for Large Round Mat until 12 rnds have been completed. 13th to 21st rnds incl: Work as for 15th to 23rd rnds incl of Large Round Mat. Make a chain 27 inches long. Complete as for Large Mat.

NAPKIN HOLDERSide (Make 2) … With single strand throughout, work as for Large Round Mat until center section measures 3½ inches in diam­eter, ending with sc rnd. Break off. Attach White to same place as sl st and work as for 6th rnd of Large Round Mat. Break off. Attach Chartreuse Green and complete as for Large Round Mat.

LARGE PLATTER MAT … Starting at center with Watermelon, make a chain 5½ inches long. 1st rnd: 5 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 5 sc in last ch; working across opposite side of chain, make sc in each ch across. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in next 5 sc, dc in each sc around, increasing 6 dc around other rounded end. Join. 3rd rnd: Sc in each st around, increasing 5 sc evenly around each rounded end. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each sc around, increasing 6 dc around each rounded end. 5th to 12th rnds incl: Repeat 3rd and 4th rnds alternately. Break off at end of 12th rnd. Attach White and work as for 15th to 23rd rnds incl of Large Round Mat, increasing as for previous rnds. Complete as before.

SMALL PLATTER MAT … Starting at center with Watermelon make a chain 5¼ inches long. Work as for Large Platter Mat until 8 rnds have been completed. Break off. Attach White and work as for 15th to 23rd rnds incl of Large Round Mat, increasing as for previous rnds. Complete as before.
