This free pattern originally published by John Dritz & Sons Company, Volume 10, in 1947.

Hat No. 776

Materials Required:

DRITZ Belastraw Art. No. 110, 2 tubes.

DRITZ Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.

20 1/2" of Millinery Wire.

GAUGE: 5 hdc or 2 1/2 star sts make 1".

CROWN: Ch 4. Join with sl st to form ring.

1st rnd: Ch 1, 9 sc in ring. Join with sl st in 1st sc.

2nd rnd: Ch 3, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and pull loop through, pull loop through next ch, pull loop through same place as sl st, pull loop through next st, y o and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1 (star st made); * pull loop through "eye" of last star st and another through back of last loop of same star st, pull loop through same st as last loop of same star st and another through next st, y o and draw through all 5 loops on hook, ch 1. Repeat from * (9 star sts). Join with sl st in top of 1st star st.

3rd rnd: Sl st in "eye" of star st, ch 2 and work 4 hdc in "eye" of each star st (36 hdc). Join with sl st in 1st hdc.

4th rnd: Ch 3, pull loop through 2nd ch from hook and through next ch, pull loop through same place as sl st and through next st, y o and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1; * pull loop through "eye" of last star st, and another through back of last loop of same star st, pull loop through each of next sts, y o and draw through all 5 loops, ch 1. Repeat from * (18 star sts). Join.

5th rnd: Sl st in "eye" of star st, ch 2 and work 3 hdc in "eye" of each star st (54 hdc). Join.

6th rnd: Repeat 4th rnd (27 star sts).

7th rnd: Sl st in "eye" of star st, ch 2, 2 hdc in same place as sl st, * 3 hdc in each of next 2 "eyes," 2 hdc in next "eye." Repeat from * (72 hdc). Join.

8th rnd: Repeat 4th rnd (36 star sts).

9th rnd: Sl st in "eye" of star st, ch 2, 2 hdc in same place as sl st, * 3 hdc in next "eye," 2 hdc in next "eye." Repeat from * (90 hdc).

10th rnd: Repeat 4th rnd (45 star sts). Piece measures about 6" across.

11th rnd: Ch 1, * 2 sc in each of next 3 "eyes," 3 sc in next "eye."

Repeat from * around, 3 sc in last "eye" (102 sc).

Clamp wire to form a circl 20 1/2" in circumference.

12th rnd: Holding wire on top of last rnd and working over it, * insert hook in next st and pull loop through, y o, through 1 loop, insert hook in same st and pull loop through, y o, through 3 loops. Repeat from * (102 sts). Work down side as follows:

1st rnd: Ch 3 and work same as 3rd row of Back of Good Companion Bag No. 777 (51 star sts). Join with sl st in "eye" of 1st star st. Ch 2, turn.

2nd rnd: Make 3 hdc in same place as sl st (2 hdc in each of 13 "eyes," 3 hdc in next "eye") 3 times; 2 hdc in each remaining "eye" (106 hdc). Join, ch 3, turn.

3rd to 9th rnds incl: Repeat 1st and 2nd rnds 3 times; then repeat 1st rnd once more (59 star sts at end of 9th rnd). Do not turn.

BRIM: 1st rnd: Ch 1, 2 sc in same place as sl st, 3 sc in next "eye," * 3 sc in next "eye," 2 sc in each of next 2 "eyes." Repeat from * (138 sc). Join.

2nd rnd: Ch 2, * skip 1 sc, dc in next sc, working from the back, make dc in skipped sc. Repeat from * (69 crossed sts). Join.

3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, sc in each st around (138 sc). Join.

4th to 10th rnds: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds 3 times; then the 2nd rnd once more.

11th rnd: Ch 1, * sc in 6 sc. Repeat from * (118 sts). Join and end off.

Fold Brim under and whip last rnd to 1st rnd. Brush inside of Crown with sizing and allow to dry. Trim as illustrated or as desired.
