Single Size Spread – 39 x 72 inches – 15 balls of No. 1 White and 35 balls of No. 64 Platinum.

Double Size Spread – 54 x 72 inches – 20 balls of No. 1 White and 47 balls of No. 64 Platinum; or

CLARK'S O.N.T. MERCERIZED BEDSPREAD COTTON, Art. B.504:

Single Size Spread – 39 x 72 inches – 15 balls of No. 1 White and 35 balls of a color of your own choice.

Double Size Spread – 54 x 72 inches – 20 balls of No. 1 White and 47 balls of a color of your own choice; or

J. & P. COATS BEDSPREAD COTTON, Art. A.800:

Single Size Spread – 39 x 72 inches – 30 balls of No. 1 White or No. 61 Ecru.

Double Size Spread – 54 x 72 inches – 40 balls of No. 1 White or No. 61 Ecru.

Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

A bolster 10 inches in diameter.

GAUGE: Each motif measures 3 inches square.

FIRST MOTIF … Starting at center with Platinum, ch 6. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: 12 sc in ring. Join to first sc. 2nd rnd: Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 3, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next loop, ch 3, 4 dc in same loop, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of ch-3 and draw dropped loop through (pc st made), * ch 3, 5 dc in next sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in first dc and draw dropped loop through (another pc st made). Repeat from * around. Join to first pc st. 4th rnd: Sl st in next sp, ch 3 and complete a pc st, ch 3, pc st in next sp, ch 3, drop Platinum, attach White, * and, working over Platinum, make 2 tr, ch 3 and tr in next sp; holding back on hook the last loop of next tr make tr in same sp as last tr was made, drop White, pick up Platinum and draw through remaining loops on hook, working over White (ch 3, pc st in next sp) twice; ch 3, drop Platinum; pick up White. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 3, join to first pc st. 5th rnd: Sl st in next sp, sc in same sp, ch 3, sc in next sp, ch 3, * in next sp make (sc, ch 3) twice; (sc in next sp, ch 3) 3 times. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, dc in first sc. 6th rnd: Ch 3 and working over White, complete a pc st in loop formed by ch 1 and dc, * ch 3, pc st in next loop, drop Platinum, pick up White and working over Platinum, in next loop make (2 d tr, ch 3) twice; in next loop make 2 d tr, ch 5 and 2 d tr; ch 3, in next loop make 2 d tr, ch 3 and 2 d tr; drop White, pick up Platinum, working over White, pc st in next loop. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

SECOND MOTIF … Work as for First Motif until 5 rnds have been completed. 6th rnd: Ch 3 and com­plete a pc st in loop formed by ch 1 and dc, ch 3, pc st in next loop, drop Platinum, pick up White, in next loop make (2 d tr, ch 3) twice; 2 d tr in next loop, ch 2, sl st in corresponding loop on First Motif, ch 2, 2 d tr in same loop on Second Motif, ch 1, sl st in corresponding sp on First Motif, ch 1, 2 d tr in next loop on Second Motif, ch 1, sl st in corresponding sp on First Motif, ch 1, 2 d tr in same sp on Second Motif, drop White, pick up Platinum, pc st in next loop, ch 1, sl st in corresponding sp on First Motif, ch 1, pc st in next loop on Second Motif, drop Platinum, pick up White and complete rnd, joining next 2 sps and corner loops as before.

For Single Size Spread, make 13 rows of 24 motifs. For Double Size Spread, make 18 rows of 24 motifs, joining adjacent sides as Second Motif was joined to First Motif (where 4 corners meet, join 3rd and 4th corners to joining of previous 2 corners).

SIDE PIECE … For Single Size Spread, make 4 rows of 74 motifs. For Double Size Spread, make 4 rows of 84 motifs. Sew narrow ends together.

Pin center in place on Side Piece. Attach White to any motif and, working through both thicknesses, sc closely around. Join and break off. Next rnd: Attach Platinum to same place as sl st, sl st in each sc around. Join and break off.

EDGING1st rnd: Attach Platinum to any motif on Side Piece, ch 3. dc closely around. Join. 2nd rnd: Sl st in each dc around. Join and break off. Block to measurements.

BOLSTER—Side Piece … Starting at center with Plati­num, ch 4. 1st rnd: 11 dc in 4th ch from hook. Join to top of starting chain. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around. Join. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc (1 dc increased). Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in each dc, increasing 12 dc evenly around. Join. Repeat 4th rnd until piece measures 10 inches in diameter. Break off. Make an­other piece the same way.

For Single Size Spread, make 10 rows of 13 motifs. For Double Size Spread, make 10 rows of 18 motifs.

Attach Platinum to short side, ch 3, dc closely across. Break off. Complete other side the same way. Pin Side Piece in place. Attach Platinum to first dc on motif piece and, working through both thicknesses, sc closely around. Join and break off. Complete other end the same way. Slip Bolster in place and sew up opening.

TASSEL (Make 2) … Cut 150 strands of White, each 20 inches long. Tie a double strand of White securely at center of strands, then fold strands in half and tie a piece of thread securely 1 inch from top.

TASSEL COVER … With Platinum, ch 2. 1st rnd: 7 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: * 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Sc in each sc around until piece measures 1½ inches deep. Break off. Slip over end of Tassel and sew securely in place. Attach Plati­num to end of Tassel Cover, ch 5, sl st to center of side of Bolster. Break off.
