Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
Long weaving needle. A scrap basket, 8 inches in diameter at top and bottom and 12 inches in depth.
GAUGE: 10 tr make 2 inches; 3 ridges and 1 woven row make 1¾ inches.
RUG … Starting at bottom with "Speed-Cro-Sheen," ch 172 to measure 35 inches. 1st row (Weaving row): Tr in 5th ch from hook and in each ch across (169 tr, counting turning chain as 1 tr). Ch 4, turn. 2nd row (wrong side): Picking up back loop only, skip first st, tr in each st across, tr in top of ch-4. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Insert hook in first tr and in free loop of first st on preceding row, sc in same place, * make an sc through next tr and free loop of next st. Repeat from * across, ending with sc through top of ch-4 and last loop. Ch 4, turn. Repeat last 2 rows alternately 2 times more (169 sts on each row—3 ridges in all). 8th row (Weaving row): Skip first sc, working through both loops, tr in each sc across. Ch 4, turn. 9th row: Picking up front loop only, work as for 2nd row. 10th row: Insert hook in free loop of first st of preceding row and in first tr, sc in same place, * make an sc through free loop of next st of preceding row and next tr. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. Repeat last 2 rows 2 times more (3 ridges in all). 15th row (Weaving row): Work as for 8th row. The 2nd to 15th rows incl constitute pattern. Work in pattern until piece measures 22 inches, ending with a weaving row. Break off.
WEAVING … Use double strands of Rug Yarn for Steps 1 to 5 incl, and 3 strands of "Knit-Cro-Sheen" Metallic for Step 6. Cut strands about 4 inches longer than row. Weave through every weaving row as follows: Step 1: * Weave over 2 tr, under 2 tr. Repeat from * across. Step 2: Weave under 1 tr, * over 2 tr, under 2 tr. Repeat from * across. Step 3: * Weave under 2 tr, over 2 tr. Repeat from * across. Step 4: Repeat Step 2. Step 5: Repeat Step 1. Step 6: Working between the 2 strands of Step 3, weave over 1 tr, * under 2 tr, over 2 tr. Repeat from * across. Finish all ends neatly on wrong side.
BORDER ... 1st rnd: With right side facing, attach "Speed-Cro-Sheen" to any corner and sc closely around, making 3 sc in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. 2nd rnd: Ch 4, picking up front loop only, tr in next sc and each sc around, making 3 tr in each corner. Join with sl st to top of ch-4. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, make an sc through each tr and free loop of each sc of preceding rnd. Join. Repeat last 2 rnds 2 times more. Ch 1, turn. Sl st in each st around. Join and break off. Block to measurements.
SCRAP BASKET … Starting at bottom, ch 126 to measure 25 inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across (125 sts). Ch 4, turn. Starting with 2nd row, work in pattern as for Rug until piece measures 12 inches in all, ending with 3 ridges. Break off. Weave as for Rug. Sew side seam together. With wrong side facing, sl st around upper and lower edges. Join and break off.
