This free pattern originally published by The American Thread Company, Star Afghan Book, Book 17, in 1941.

The dainty Sea Shell stitch made into a stunning design in several shades of one color.
50 X 70
Materials Required--
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"DAWN" KNITTING WORSTED or
"DAWN" GERMANTOWN WOOL
2 2-oz. Skeins Shade No. 1234.5 Tiger Lily.
6 2-oz. Skeins Shade No. 1234.8 Lt. Copper.
6 2-oz. Skeins Shade No. 1234.9 Rust.
11 2-oz. Skeins Shade No. 1235 Spanish Tile.
4 2-oz. Skeins Shade No. 1234 Maroon.
Bone Crochet Hook No. 3 or 4.
With Tiger Lily chain 52 (rather loosely) 2 dc in 4th st from hook, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, * ch 2, 2 dc in same space with sc, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn.
2nd Row--2 dc in sc, sc in 2 ch loop, * ch 2, 2 dc in same 2 ch loop, sc in next loop, repeat from * across row, ch 3, turn and repeat 2nd row 3 times. Work should now measure about 2 1/4 X 14 inches, break yarn.
Attach Lt. Copper in same space, turn and work shells across row, do not turn work, 2 dc in same space with last sc, sc in same space with shell ( this forms a corner) ch 2, 2 dc in same space, sc in ch 2 of 3rd row, ch 2, 2 dc in same space, sc in ch 2 of 1st row, ch 2, turn and continue work on the 2 sides working a shell in 2nd dc of corner shell.
Work 4 more rows with Lt. Copper, 5 rows in Rust, 5 rows Spanish Tile, then work 2 rows each of Maroon, Spanish Tile, Rust, Lt. Copper, Tiger Lily, Lt. Copper, Rust, Spanish Tile, Maroon, 5 rows each of Spanish Tile, Rust, Lt. Copper. Around the same 2 sides work with Lt. Copper a row of sc working 1 sc in 2nd dc of shell, 1 sc in the ch 2 and 1 sc in sc. This completes 1/4 of the Afghan. Work 3 more sections and sew them together taking up both loops of the sc, placing the short section of the Tiger Lilly to the corner.
BORDER. With Spanish Tile work a row of shells around entire Afghan, ch 3, turn, work 6 more rows increasing in each corner by working a shell in first dc of next shell and shell in 3 ch loop of same shell, turn at end of each row, break yarn and work 2 rows of shells in Maroon.
