Hopscotch Afghan Pattern

Crocheted in afghan stitch with an unusual raised picot design and bordered in a contrasting color.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 12 skeins of No. 649 Olive Green and 5 skeins of No. 282 Rust.

Afghan Hook Size H.

Afghan measures 46 x 65 inches … Each strip, including side border, measures 6½ x 63 inches.

GAUGE: 9 afghan sts = 2 inches; 7 afghan st rows = 2 inches.

FIRST STRIP (Make 4) … Starting at narrow edge with Green, ch 20. Work in afghan st until the First Half of the 3rd row has been completed. Second Half of 3rd row: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, (yarn over and draw through 2 loops) 4 times; ch 4—this ch-4 will make a picot between sts when next row is made; (yarn over and draw through 2 loops) 10 times; ch 4, (yarn over and through 2 loops) 5 times. 4th rowFirst Half of Row: Holding ch-4 loops to front of work to form picots, work as for previous First Half of row. There are 20 loops on hook. Second Half of Row: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, (yarn over and through 2 loops) 3 times; (ch 4, yarn over and through 2 loops) 3 times; (yarn over and through 2 loops) 7 times; (ch 4, yarn over and through 2 loops) 3 times; (yarn over and through 2 loops) 3 times. 5th row: Work First Half of row as before. Second Half of Row: Yarn over and through 1 loop, (yarn over and through 2 loops) twice; (ch 4, yarn over and through 2 loops) 5 times; (yarn over and through 2 loops) 5 times; (ch 4, yarn over and through 2 loops) 5 times; (yarn over and through 2 loops) twice. 6th and 7th rows: Re­peat 5th row. 8th row: Repeat 4th row. 9th row: Repeat 3rd row. 10th row: Work First Half of row as before. Second Half of Row: Work off loops as before, making a picot between the 10th and 11th sts—center of row. 11th row: Making a picot after 9th, 10th and 11th sts on Second Half of row, work in afghan st. 12th, 13th and 14th rows: Making a picot after 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th sts on Second Half of row, work in afghan st. 15th row: Repeat 11th row. 16th row: Re­peat 10th row. Repeat last 14 rows (3rd through 16th row) for pattern. Work in pattern until 15 patterns in all have been completed. Repeat 3rd through 9th row once more. Repeat 2nd row twice. To Finish: Sl st in 2nd vertical bar and in each vertical bar across. Break off and fasten. Strip should measure about 63 inches.

Side Border: 1st row: With right side facing, attach Rust to corner st of side edge of strip. Working along end of rows, ch 1, picking up back loop only of each end st throughout, sc in each st across. Break off and fasten. 2nd row: With right side facing, attach Rust to first st of previous row, ch 1, picking up back loop only of each sc through­out, sc in each sc across. Break off and fasten. Repeat last row twice more. Work border along opposite edge in same way.

SECOND STRIP (Make 3) …Work same as for First Strip until the 2nd row has been completed. Starting with 10th row of First Strip, work 10th through 16th row. Then repeat 3rd through 16th row of First Strip until strip has same number of rows as First Strip, working last 2 rows as for First Strip. Finish and work Side Borders same as for First Strip.
   Block each strip to measurements. Sew strips together lengthwise, alter­nating patterns.

Top Border: With right side facing, attach Rust to corner st of top edge, sc in each st across joined strips. Break off and fasten. Next 3 rows: Repeat 2nd row of Side Border.
   Work border along opposite edge in same way. With wrong side facing, sl st in each st around entire outer edge. Join to first st. Break off and fasten.
