Afghan measures 46 x 64 inches

GAUGE:   1 single strip (23 sts) = 4¾ inches; 1 pattern (20 rows) = 6 inches.

DOUBLE STRIP (Make 3) … Starting at narrow edge with White, ch 46. 1st rowFirst Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, draw up a loop in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. There are the same number of loops on hook as there were chain sts. Second Half of Row: Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, * yarn over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * across until 2 loops remain on hook; drop White, attach Black and draw Black through last 2 loops. The loop which remains always counts as the first st of next row (Fig. 3). NOTE: When changing colors, always twist the unused color around the other, being careful not to pull yarn up too tightly. When carrying yarn behind more than 2 sts, twist unused color around color in use after every 2nd st. 2nd rowFirst Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, with White draw up a loop in 2nd vertical bar (formed by loop of previous row), with Black draw up a loop in next vertical bar, with White draw up a loop in each of next 17 vertical bars, with Black draw up a loop in next bar, with White draw up a loop in next bar, with Black draw up a loop in each of next 2 bars, with White draw up a loop in next bar, with Black draw up a loop in next bar, with White draw up a loop in each of next 17 bars, with Black draw up a loop in next bar, with White draw up a loop in next bar, insert hook through last vertical bar and the st directly behind it (arrow on Fig. 4) and with Black draw up a loop (this gives a firm edge to this side). There are the same number of loops as on previous row. Second Half of Row: Black over hook and draw through the Black loop, * White over hook and draw through the next Black and White loop, Black over hook and draw through the next White and Black loop, (carrying unused color as stated, White over hook and draw through next 2 loops) 17 times; Black over hook and draw through next 2 loops, White over hook and draw through next 2 loops, (Black over hook and draw through next 2 loops) twice. Repeat from * until 2 loops remain on hook, draw White through last 2 loops.

Hereafter work Second Half of each row in this manner, using same color as the 2nd loop of the loops remaining on hook. 3rd rowFirst Half of Row: Retaining all loops on hook, * draw up a Black loop in next vertical bar, a White loop in next bar, a Black loop in following bar, a White loop in each of the next 15 bars, a Black loop in next bar, a White loop in next bar, a Black loop in next bar, a White loop in each of the next 2 bars. Starting with 4th row on chart, work every row from A to C. Follow chart until the 21st row has been completed; then repeat 2nd through 21st row 9 times more. Work 2nd row, then first row once.
