Golden Grain Afghan Pattern

A brand new version of the popular wheat pattern crocheted in simple stitches — an ideal complement to an Early American decor.

COATS & CLARK'S "RED HEART" KNITTING WORSTED, 4 Ply, Art. E. 234 (4 oz. "Tangle-Proof" Pull-Out Skeins): 11 skeins of No. 360 Wood Brown and 8 skeins of No. 225 Lt. Yellow.

Afghan measures 50 x 68 inches ... Motifs measure 6 inches square

MOTIF (Make 88) ... Starting at cen­ter with Brown, ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc. Drop Brown. 2nd rnd: Leav­ing a 2-inch end, draw a Yellow loop through loop on hook, working over Yellow end, sc in first sc, * in next sc make sc, ch 2 (corner loop) and sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around to within last sc, in next sc make sc, ch 2, insert hook in same sc and draw loop through, drop Yellow, pick up Brown and complete the sc. Join with sl st to first sc.

NOTE: Always work over the strand of unused color to conceal and carry it across the section being made. To make a ch over unused color bring unused color forward between loop on hook and color in use and with color in use make the ch. To make a dc or tr over unused color with color in use, complete a dc or tr to the point where 2 loops remain on hook, bring unused color forward between loop on hook and color in use and with color in use complete the dc.

3rd rnd: With Brown and working over Yellow as indicated ch 3 to count as first dc—start every rnd in this manner working over Yellow dc in next sc, * dc in next corner loop changing to Yellow—to change colors with color in use, complete a dc to the point where 2 loops remain on hook, drop color; with new color complete the dc; with Yellow and working over Brown, ch 2, in same loop make dc, ch 1, with Brown and working over Yellow ch 1 and dc; dc in each sc to next corner loop. Re­peat from * around ending with dc in last sc. Join with sl st to top of ch-3. 4th rnd: Ch 3, * dc in each dc to next sp, drop Brown, pick up Yel­low, holding back on hook last loop of each dc, make 3 dc in next sp, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook—cluster made, (hereafter, the word cluster will be abbreviated cl); ch 2, tr in next dc, ch 2, in next sp make a cl, changing color as on the dc's. Repeat from * around. Join.
5th and 6th rnds: Ch 3, * dc in each dc to cl, dc in tip of next cl, drop Brown, pick up Yellow, cl in next sp, ch 2, tr in next tr, ch 2, cl in next sp changing color, with Brown, dc in tip of next cl. Repeat from * around. Join. 7th rnd: Ch 3, * dc in each dc to cl, dc in tip of next cl, drop Brown, pick up Yellow, cl in next sp, ch 3, 3-tr cl in next tr, ch 3, cl in next sp changing color, with Brown dc in tip of next cl. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off Yellow and fasten. 8th rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, * sc in each dc and in tip of next cl, 3 sc in next sp, in tip of next cl make sc, ch 1 and sc, 3 sc in next sp, sc in tip of next cl. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off and fasten. Sew 8x11 Motifs neatly together.

BORDER ... 1st rnd: Attach Brown to first sc following any corner, ch 1, sc in same sc and in each sc around, making 3 sc in same st at each cor­ner. Join. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, skip first sc, * dc in back loop of each sc to within next corner, in corner sc make dc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * around. Join. Drop Brown, attach Yellow. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, sc in joining, sc in back loop of each dc making sc, ch 3 and sc in each corner sp. Join. Break off and fasten. 4th rnd: Pick up Brown and sl st in first sc, ch 3, pick­ing up both loops of each sc, dc in each sc making dc, ch 3 and dc in each corner sp. Join. Break off and fasten. Block to measurements.
