MATERIALS:
CLARK'S BIG BALL MERCERIZED CROCHET, Size 20, 2 balls of White or Ecru.
Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 8 or 9.

Chair Back—about 13 x 16 inches
Arm Pieces—about 6½ x 11 inches

CHAIR BACK … Starting at bottom, make a chain 20 inches long (13 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: 3 tr in 13th ch from hook, * (ch 1, skip 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch) twice; ch 6, skip 8 ch, 3 tr in next ch, ch 1, skip 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch, ch 6, skip 8 ch, 3 tr in next ch. Repeat from * 5 more times; then (ch 1, skip 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch) twice; ch 4, skip 5 ch, tr in next ch. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 8, turn. 2nd row: * 3 tr in center st of next tr-group, (ch 1, 3 tr in center st of next tr-group) twice; ch 4, skip 5 ch, 3 tr in next ch, (ch 1, skip next tr-group, 3 tr in next ch) twice; ch 4. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 4, skip 4 ch, tr in next st of turning ch, ch 8, turn. 3rd row: * 3 tr in center st of next tr-group, (ch 1, 3 tr in center st of next tr-group) twice; ch 6, skip next tr-group, 3 tr in next ch, ch 1, skip next tr-group, 3 tr in next ch, ch 6, skip next tr-group. Repeat from * across row, ending with ch 4, skip 4 ch, tr in next st of turning ch. Ch 8, turn. 4th and 5th rows: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows. 6th row: * 3 tr in center st of next tr-group, (ch 1, 3 tr in center st of next tr-group) twice; ch 8, skip next tr-group, 3 tr in next ch, ch 8, skip next tr-group. Repeat from * across row, ending as before. Ch 8, turn. 7th row: * 3 tr in center st of next tr-group, (ch 1, 3 tr in center st of next tr-group) twice; ch 6, skip 7 ch, 3 tr in next ch, ch 1, skip next tr-group, 3 tr in next ch, ch 6. Repeat from * across, ending as before. Ch 8, turn. 8th row: Same as 6th row. 9th row: Same as 7th row. Repeat the 2nd to 9th rows incl. for pattern, until piece measures about 11 inches. Do not fasten off, but work border as follows: Ch 4, make 4 tr in same place as ch-4 and, working down side of piece, make 3 tr in each sp and 1 tr at end of each row to within corner sp; make 4 tr in corner sp, 5 tr in 4th ch of same sp, then work tr in each ch across bottom, 5 tr in corner ch, and continue around, working tr in each tr and each ch across top. Join with sl st to top of ch-4. Ch 4, turn. Tr in each tr around, making a ch-4 p after each 6th tr and working 5 tr at corners—to make a p, ch 4, s c in 4th ch from hook. Join and fasten off.

ARM PIECES… Starting at bottom, ch 87. 1st row: 3 tr in 13th ch from hook, * (ch 1, skip 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch) twice; ch 6, skip 8 ch, 3 tr in next ch, ch 1, skip 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch, ch 6, skip 8 ch, 3 tr in next ch. Repeat from * once more; then (ch 1, skip 3 ch, 3 tr in next ch) twice; ch 4, skip 5 ch, tr in next ch. Ch 8, turn. Starting with 2nd row, work as for chair back until piece measures about 9 inches. Work border as for chair back. Fasten off.
