Gauge: 7 d c = 1 inch.

Directions are given for size 12. Sizes 14 and 16 are given in brackets.

Starting at neck edge, ch 161 (for all sizes), 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in next st of ch, work a double knot st (knot st: * draw up ¼ inch loop on hook, yarn over hook and pull through, forming a ch st, s c over single loop of st (single knot st), repeat from * once for double knot st, skip next 3 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of next 3 sts of ch, * double knot st, skip next 3 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of next 3 sts of ch, repeat from * across remaining sts of ch (26 knot sts), turn.
2nd Row—Ch 3 (counts as 1 d c), 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, * work a single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st of previous row, work a single knot st, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, repeat from * across row, working last d c in 3rd st of ch.
3rd Row—Ch 3, decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * yarn over hook, insert in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * once, yarn over and pull through all loops at one time), * work a double knot st, skip next double knot st, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, repeat from * across row ending with double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, 2 d c in 3rd st of ch, turn.
4th Row—Ch 3, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, * single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, single knot st, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, repeat from * across row ending with single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, single knot st, d c in next d c, 1 d c in 3rd st of ch, turn.
5th Row—Ch 3, * double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, repeat from * across row, ending with double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 2 d c in 3rd st of ch, turn.
6th Row—Same as 4th row, but working ch 3, 4 d c at the beginning of row and 1 d c in 3rd st of ch at end of row.
7th Row—Ch 3, * double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, d c in next d c, repeat from * across row ending with double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, d c in next d c, 2 d c in 3rd st of ch.
8th Row—Same as 4th row, but working ch 3, 6 d c at the beginning of row, 5 d c in each d c panel, ending row with d c in 3rd st of ch.
9th Row—Ch 3, skip double knot st, * 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, double knot st, repeat from * across row ending with 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 2 d c in 3rd st of ch.
10th Row—Same as 4th row, but working ch 3, 8 d c at the beginning of row, 6 d c in each d c panel, ending row with 6 d c in last d c panel, turn.
11th Row—Ch 3, skip 1 d c, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, * double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, repeat from * across row, ending with double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, 2 d c in 3rd st of ch, turn.
12th Row—Same as 4th row, but working ch 3, 10 d c at the beginning of row, 7 d c in each d c panel, ending row with 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, turn.
13th Row—Ch 3, skip 1 d c, 1 d c in each of next 2 d c, * double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, repeat from * across row ending with double knot st, skip next 3 d c, 2 d c in 3rd st of ch (26 knot sts), turn.
14th Row—Same as 4th row, but working ch 3, 1 d c at the beginning of row, 8 d c in each d c panel, ending row with 1 d c in each of the last 3 d c, turn.
15th Row—Ch 3, skip 1 d c, 1 d c in next d c, * double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, repeat from * across row, ending with 1 d c in next d c, 1 d c in 3rd st of ch, turn. Working in pattern continue to increase 1 d c in center of each d c panel every other row, at the same time decreas­ing 1 st at the beginning of same row and increasing 1 st at the end of same row. Continue to work in this manner until there are 15 (16, 17) d c in each of the d c panels and there are 27 (29, 31) rows.
Next 2 Rows—Work even in pattern omitting the increases in each of the 15 (16, 17) d c panels, but continue to decrease and increase in the 2 end panels, cut yarn leaving an end. Thread into needle and sew last 2 sts made over the first 2 sts of row, overlapping sts when sewing, there should be 15 (16, 17) sts in the connected panel, this is right side of work.
Next Round: With right side of work toward you, attach yarn in the 9th (10th, 11th) d c of the 7th panel after the panel that opening was connected. From here on this will be start of each round, ch 3, 1 d c in each of next 6 (6, 7) d c of same panel, * single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, single knot st, 1 d c in each of next 15 (16, 17) d c, repeat from * 4 times, single knot st, s c in next double knot st, single knot st, 1 d c in each of next 7 (7, 8) d c, ch 4, skip next 8 (9, 9) d c of same panel, next 6 double knot sts, d c in 8th (8th, 9th) d c of next panel, 1 d c in each of next 7 (8, 8) d c of same panel, * single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, single knot st, 1 d c in each of next 15 (16, 17) d c, repeat from * 5 times, single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, single knot st, 1 d c in each of next 8 (9, 9) d c of next panel, ch 4, join in 3rd st of ch, do not turn this or the following rounds.
Next Round—Ch 3, 1 d c in each of next 6 (6, 7) d c, * double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 15 (16, 17) d c, repeat from * 4 times, double knot st, 1 d c in each of next 7 (7, 8) d c, 1 d c in each of the 4 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of next 8 (9, 9) d c, finish round to correspond, join.
Next 5 Rounds: Work even in pattern having 15 (16, 17) d c in each d c panel and 19 (20, 21) d c in each underarm panel.
Next Round: Work in pattern, decreasing 1 st in center of each d c panel, 14 (15, 16) d c in each panel, 18 (19, 20) in each under arm panel. Work 1 round even.
Next Round: Work in pattern, decreasing 1 st in center of each d c panel. Work 2 rounds even. Continue in the above manner decreasing 1 st in center of each d c panel every 3rd round until there are 8 (9, 10) d c in each panel and 12 (13, 14) d c in each underarm panel. Work even in pattern for 8 (10, 12) rounds or length desired, cut yarn.

FINISHING: With right side toward you, attach yarn at underarm and work 1 d c in each of 4 sts of ch, 3 d c over end st of next row, work even in pattern across sleeve cap, 3 d c over end st of next row, join in 1 st d c, cut yarn. Work other sleeve in same manner. With right side toward you, attach yarn at lower edge of center opening and work 60 (64, 68) s c up right side, 3 s c in corner st, 1 s c in each st of ch around neck line, 3 s c in corner st, 60 (64, 68) s c down left side, join, do not turn.
Next Row—1 s c in each of next 4 s c, * ch 4, skip 3 s c, 1 s c in each of next 7 (8, 9) s c, repeat from * 4 times, ch 4, skip 3 s c, 1 s c in next s c (6 buttonholes), continue working in s c around neck and left front, working 3 s c in center st at each corner, join. Working up right front only, work 1 s c in each s c and 1 s c in each st of the ch 4 for buttonholes, cut yarn. Attach yarn at lower edge of left side and work 2 rows of s c over 60 (64, 68) sts, cut yarn. Sew buttons in position.

STOLE: Ch 61 (64, 67), s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, turn.
Next Row—* Work a double knot st (drawing loops up ½ inch only), skip 2 s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * across row, 20 (21, 22) knot sts, turn.
Next Row—Work 3 single knot sts, s c in center s c of next double knot st, * double knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, repeat from * across row. Repeat last row until work measures 5 inches from the beginning. Continue in the above manner but drawing loops up ¾ inch for remainder of stole. Work even until stole measures 46 (48, 50) inches from the beginning, cut yarn. Attach yarn in first st of starting ch, 1 s c in same space, * ch 4, skip 3 sts, 1 s c in each of next 8 (8, 9) sts, repeat from * 4 times, ch 4, skip 3 sts, 1 s c in each remaining st, ch 1, turn.
Next Row—1 s c in each s c and 1 s c in each st of ch of buttonholes. Without cutting yarn and working across long edge, 1 s c in end st of each s c row, single knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, * double knot st, s c in center s c of next double knot st, repeat from * across side and lower end, working opposite side to cor­respond, cut yarn.
