Materials Required:

Columbia-Minerva Featherweight Knitting Worsted (2 oz skein)

No.722-14A--Multicolor Stripe
Color 1--Dark Brown--4 Skeins
Color 2--Medium Brown--2 Skeins
Color 3--Medium Beige--2 Skeins
Color 4--Light Beige--2 Skeins
Color 5--Dark Green--1 Skein
Color 6--Light Green--1 Skein
Color 7--Yellow--2 Skeins
Color 8--Bright Red--1 Skein
Color 9--Medium Red--1 Skein

No. 722-14B--Two-tone Stripe
Color 1--7 Skeins
Color 2--6 Skeins

1 "Boye" Aluminum Crochet Hook "J" (Size 9)

Gauge: 2 1/4 inches across center of Shell

Pattern Stitch: (Multiple of 8 chain plus 2)

Chain desired length.

Row 1--1 S.C. in second Ch from hook, *skip 3 Ch, 9 D.C. in next Ch, skip 3 Ch, 1 S.C. in next Ch, repeat from * across row, turn.

Row 2--Ch 2, Y.O., insert hook in first D.C., draw yarn through St, Y.O. and through 2 loops (loosely), repeat from * in each of the next 3 Sts. (5 loops on hook), then Y.O. and through all 5 loops, Ch 1 for eye of inverted Half Shell, **Ch 3, 1 S.C. in next D.C., Ch 3, repeat fro * in each of the next 9 Sts. (10 loops on hook), then Y.O. and through all 10 loops, Ch 1 for eye of Shell, repeat from ** across, ending draw yarn through 6 llops on hook, Ch 1 for eye of Half Shell, turn.

Row 3--Ch 3, 4 D.C. in eye of Half Shell, 1 S.C. in next S.C., *9 D.C. in eye of next Shell, 1 S.C. in S.C., repeat from * across, ending 5 D.C. in eye of last Half Shell.

Row 4--Ch 1, 1 S.C. in first D.C., **Ch 3, *Y.O., insert hook in next St, draw yarn through St, Y.O. and through 2 loops, repeat from * in each of the next 8 Sts. (10 loops on hook), then Y.O. and through all 10 loops, Ch 1 for eye of Shell, Ch 3, 1 S.C. in next St, repeat from ** across row, turn.

Row 5--Ch 1, *1 S.C. in S.C., 9 D.C. in eye of next Shell, repeat from * across, ending 1 S.C. in last St, turn.

Repeat Pattern from Row 2.

No. 722-14A--Multicolor Stripe Afghan:

With Color 1 Ch 162 (loosely). Work in Pattern St. (20 Patterns across row), using Colors in the following order: (Always draw new color through last loop on hook)

Rows 1, 2 and 3--Color 1.

Rows 4 and 5--Color 2.

Rows 6 and 7--Color 3.

Rows 8 and 9--Color 4.

Rows 10 and 11--Color 5.

Rows 12 and 13--Color 6.

Rows 14, 15, 16 and 17--Color 7.

Rows 18 and 19--Color 8.

Rows 20 and 21--Color 9.

Rows 22, 23, 24 and 25--Color 1.

Rows 26 and 27--Color 2.

Rows 28 and 29--Color 3.

Rows 30 and 31--Color 4.

Rows 32 and 33--Color 3.

Rows 34 and 35--Color 2.

Rows 36, 37, 38 and 39--Color 1.

Repeat Stripes from Row 10 through Row 39 (omitting Rows 16 and 17), then work two rows each of Colors 5 and 6, four rows of Color 7, two rows each of Colors 8, 9, 4, 3 and 2, then four rows of Color 1. Do not break yarn, but continue with Color 1 around remaining 3 sides of Afghan for Border, working 9 D.C. in eye of Shells, 1 S.C. between Shells.

722-14B--Two-tone Stripe Afghan:

With Color 1 Ch 162 (loosely). Work in Pattern St. (20 Patterns across row) as follows:

With Color 1 work Row 1 of Pattern, break yarn, draw Color 2 through last loop on hook, turn.

*With Color 2 work Rows 2 and 3 of Pattern, break yarn, draw Color 1 through last loop on hook, turn.

With Color 1 work Rows 4 and 5 of Pattern, break yarn, draw Color 2 through last loop on hook, turn.

Repeat from * 21 times more (89 rows from start), do not break yarn, but continue with Color 1 around remaining 3 sides of Afghan for Border, working 9 D.C. in eye of Shells, 1 S.C. between Shells.
