The following instructions were found in Spool Cotton #111, Tatting Book.

 

No. 8171: Use one shuttle and a ball of thread.

Starting at center, make r of 5 ds, 3 p's sep. by 5 ds, 5 ds, cl. Make 5 more r's, joining each r to previous r at the side p (6 r's in all). Break off. Tie ends of shuttle and ball threads. Make sr of 4 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, cl. * Rw and on ball thread make a ch of 5 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 5 ds, cl. Rw, lr of 6 ds, join to p of sr, 6 ds, join to p of any r of center, 6 ds, p, 6 ds, cl. Rw and make a ch as before. Rw, make sr of 4 ds, join to p of lr, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, cl. Repeat from * around, joining last ch to 1st sr made. Break off.

 

No. 8148: Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, size 30, 1 ball, and two shuttles.

When completed, medallion measures about 2¼ x 1½ inches.

Tie ball and shuttle threads together. In making the ch's, the 2nd shuttle thread is used the same as ball thread. With 1st shuttle, make r of 13 ds, p, 13 ds, cl. Rw, make 1st surrounding ch of 16 ds, join to p of r, p, 16 ds, join to base of r. 2nd surrounding ch of 6 ds, p, 6 ds, rw. With 2nd shuttle, make r of 5 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 5 ds, cl. Rw and continue ch of 5 ds. Rw and with 2nd shuttle make r of 5 ds, join to last p of 1st r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 5 ds, cl. Rw and continue ch of 5 ds, join to p of 1st ch. Rw, with 2nd shuttle make r of 5 ds, join to last p of 2nd r, 3 ds, p, 2 ds, p, 2 ds, p, 2 ds, p, 2 ds, p, 3 ds, p, 5 ds, cl. Rw and continue ch of 5 ds. Rw, with 2nd shuttle make r of 5 ds, join to last p of previous r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 5 ds, cl. Rw, continue ch of 5 ds. Rw, with 2nd shuttle make r of 5 ds, join to last p of previous r, 4 ds, p, 4. ds, p, 5 ds, cl. Rw and continue ch of 6 ds, p, 6 ds. Join to base of 1st surrounding ch. Make another ch of 5 ds. With 1st shuttle, make r of 13 ds, p, 13 ds, cl. Rw. Make 1st surrounding ch of 16 ds, join to p of r, p, 16 ds, join to base of r. Then make 2nd surrounding ch of 6 ds, join to last p of last surrounding ch of previous r's, 2 ds, 5 p's sep. by 2 ds, 3 ds, join to p of 1st surrounding ch, p, 3 ds, 6 p's sep. by 2 ds, 6 ds. Join to base of 1st surrounding ch. Make another ch of 5 ds (this completes one half of medallion). Repeat this half once more, joining at 1st and last p's of last surrounding ch. Fasten and break off.
