The following instructions were found in Spool Cotton #111, Tatting Book.

 

No. 8141: Use one shuttle and a ball of thread.

R of 10 ds, p, 10 ds, cl. Make 2 more r's same as this. * Rw, make a ch of 3 p's sep. by 5 ds, rw. R of 10 ds, join to p of adjacent r, 10 ds, cl. Make 2 more r's, but without joining to any p's. Repeat from * across for length desired. Break off. This is one half of insertion. Work other half as follows: R of 10 ds, p, 10 ds, cl. ** R of 10 ds, join to joining of 2 p's of first half of insertion, 10 ds, cl. R of 10 ds, join to free p of center r of group on first half of insertion, 10 ds, cl. Rw. Make a ch of 3 p's sep. by 5 ds, rw. R of 10 ds, join to joining of 2 r's just made, 10 ds, cl. Repeat from ** across. Break off.

 

No. 8133: Use one shuttle and a ball of thread.

With shuttle thread, make lr of 8 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 8 ds, cl. Attach ball thread. * Rw, ch of 10 ds, p, 10 ds. Rw and with shuttle thread make r of 9 ds, p, 9 ds, cl (inner r made). Rw and with shuttle thread ch of 8 ds, p, 4 ds, join to last p of 1st r made, 4 ds, join to p of inner r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 8 ds. Join to base of inner r. Rw and with shuttle thread make another inner r as before. Rw, ch of 8 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, join to p of last inner r, 4 ds, p, 4 ds, p, 8 ds. Join to base of last inner r. Ch of 10 ds, p, 10 ds. Rw and with shuttle thread make r of 8 ds, join to 2nd p of 4-p ch, 4 ds, p, 8 ds, cl. Repeat from * for length desired.
