Hot Plate Mats Pattern #3131

Materials Required—
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
12 60-yd. Balls White.
6 60-yd. Balls Green.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

All mats are worked with double strand of thread. The 1st 12 rows of small oval mat are given in parenthesis.

LARGE OVAL MAT. With White, ch 35, (28) 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 30 chs, (23) 2 s c in next ch, 3 s c in end ch. Working on other side of ch, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 30 sts, (23) 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in same space with first 2 sts, join.
2nd Row—Working in back loop of st only, work 2 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 32 sts, (25) 2 s c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 32 sts, (25) 2 s c in each of the next 2 sts, join. The following rows are all worked in back loop of st only. When changing Color, complete st with next Color.
3rd Row—2 s c in each of the 7 sts at each end and 1 s c in each remaining st, drop White.
4th Row—With Green, work same as 3rd row but work 2 s c in each of the 10 sts at each end, drop Green, 118 sts, (104 sts).
5th Row—With White, 1 puff st in each st, (puff st: thread over needle, insert in st and pull loop up the length of a d c, thread over needle, insert in same st and pull loop up same length, thread over and pull through all loops on needle but one, thread over and pull through 2 loops) drop White.
6th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each st.
7th Row—With White, same as 5th row.
8th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each st increasing in every 3rd st at each end 9 times, 136 s c, (122 s c).
9th Row—With White, same as 8th row, 154 s c, (140 s c) then work 1 row even.
11th Row—1 s c in each s c increasing in every 3rd st at each end 11 times, (10 times) 176 sts, (160 sts). The remainder of the mat is worked in both loops of st.
12th Row—With White, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, with Green, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts carrying the White under the Green sts and the Green under the White sts, repeat from beginning all around.
13th Row—With White, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * 4 times, then work 1 s c in each of the next 40 sts, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * 5 times, 1 s c in each of the next 44 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, join.
14th Row—Ch 1, 1 s c in next st, * with Green, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, with White, 1 s c in each of the next 6 sts, repeat from * around each end of mat where there is an increase between Green blocks and work 1 s c in Green over each of the 4 White sts of 13th row and 1 s c in White over each of the 4 Green sts of 13th row on sides of mat.
15th Row—With White, 1 s c in each s c increasing in every 5th st at each end 9 times.
16th Row—Working with the 2 Colors and without increasing always work the 4 s c in Green over the Green sts of 12th row and the White sts between each Green block.
17th, 18th & 19th Rows—With White, 1 s c in each s c increasing on each end if necessary to keep work flat.
20th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each s c increasing at each end if necessary to keep work flat.
21st Row—With White, puff st in each st.
22nd Row—With Green, repeat 20th row.
23rd Row—* Ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip 2 s c, sl st in next s c, repeat from * all around.
SMALL OVAL MAT. Work 1st 12 rows same as large oval mat using the figures in brackets.
13th Row—With White, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * 3 times, then work 1 s c in each of the next 48 sts, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from * 3 times, 1 s c in each of the next 48 sts, join.
14th Row—Same as 14th row of large mat.
15th Row—With White, work 1 s c in each s c on sides and increase in every 5th st at each end 8 times.
16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd & 23rd Rows—Same as large mat.
ROUND MAT. With White, ch 2, 6 s c in 1st st of ch, join to form a ring.
2nd & 3rd Rows—Working in back loop of st only, 2 s c in each s c, join each row. The following rows are worked in back loop of st only.
4th Row—With Green, increase in every other st, drop Green.
5th Row—With White, puff st in each s c, drop White.
6th Row—With Green and working in s c increase in every other st, drop Green.
7th Row—With White, same as 5th row.
8th Row—Same as 6th row.
9th Row—With White, 1 s c in each s c.
10th Row—Increase in every 9th st.
11th Row—Increase in every 3rd st. The remainder of mat is worked in both loops of st.
12th Row—Same as 12th row of large mat.
13th Row—With White, 1 s c in each s c.
14th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, with White, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from beginning all around.
15th Row—Same as 13th row.
16th Row—With White, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, with Green, 1 s c in each of the next 4 sts, repeat from beginning all around.
17th Row—With White, increase in every 5th st and work 1 row even.
19th Row—Increase in every 5th st.
20th Row—With Green, 1 s c in each s c.
21st Row—With White, puff st in each s c.
22nd Row—With Green, 1 s c in each st.
23rd Row—Same as 23rd row of large mat.
