Materials Required—
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET AND KNITTING COTTON
2 400-yd. Balls White.
"STAR" SIX STRAND MERCERIZED EMBROIDERY COTTON
1 yd. Black for Nose.
2 Buttons for Eyes.
Kapok or Cotton for filling.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 5 or 6.

BODY. With 2 strands of thread, ch 45 and work 44 s c on ch (ch 1 to turn each row).
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Rows—1 s c in each s c.
7th Row—1 loop st in each s c (loop st: insert needle in first s c, wind thread twice around forefinger of left hand, insert needle into two loops on finger, hold loops down on work and complete s c).
8th Row—1 s c in each loop st.
9th and 10th Rows—1 s c in each s c.
11th Row—With wrong side of work toward you, work a loop st in each s c, repeat last 4 rows 4 times, break thread and work other side of body in same manner.
HEAD. Ch 17 and work 16 s c on ch. Work 2 more rows of s c.
4th Row—1 s c in each of the first 7 s c, single loop st in each remaining s c, (single loop st: wind thread once around finger) loop sts are at back of head.
5th Row—1 s c in each loop st, repeat last 2 rows once.
8th Row—Same as 4th row, then ch 6.
9th Row—5 s c on ch, 1 s c in each s c.
10th Row—1 s c in each of the first 7 s c, loop st in each remaining s c.
11th Row—1 s c in each st. Repeat the last 2 rows 4 times.
20th Row—1 loop st in each s c at top of head.
21st Row—1 s c in each s c.
22nd Row—1 loop st in each s c, break thread.
Work opposite side of head working first 3 rows same as first half of head.
4th Row—Loop st in each of the first 9 s c, 1 s c in each of the last 7 s c.
5th Row—1 s c in each st, repeat last 2 rows once, then repeat loop st row.
9th Row—1 s c in each s c, then ch 6.
10th Row—5 s c on ch, 1 loop st in each of the next 9 s c, 1 s c in each of the last 7 s c.
11th Row—1 s c in each s c.
12th Row—1 loop st in each of the first 13 s c, 1 s c in each of the last 7 s c, repeat last 2 rows 3 times, then work 1 more row of s c.
20th Row—1 loop st in each s c.
21st Row—1 s c in each s c.
22nd Row—1 loop st in each s c, break thread.
LEG. Ch 20, join and work 1 s c in each st, without joining rows, continue working 1 s c in each s c taking up back loop of st only. When work measures 2¼ inches, work 2 s c in each of next 3 s c (Toe) 1 s c in each remaining s c, then increase in every other s c over the 6 toe sts, work around side and break thread. Work 3 more legs.
SOLE. Ch 9, work 3 s c in second st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 6 sts, 2 s c in last st, working on opposite side of ch, 1 s c in each of next 6 sts without joining work 2 s c in each of the next 3 s c (Toe) 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 2 s c 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, * 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in next s c, repeat from * twice, then 1 s c in each of the next 17 s c, break thread. Work 3 more soles.
EAR. Ch 13 turn and work 12 s c on ch, then work a row of loops.
3rd Row—Work in s c even, repeat last 2 rows once, then work a row of loops.
7th Row—Work in s c decreasing 1 s c at beginning and end of row. Repeat last 2 rows 4 times, then work 1 row of loops, break thread. Work a row of loops down one side, 1 s c in each st at lower edge, 1 row of loops up opposite side of ear, break thread. Work another ear.
TAIL. Ch 19 and work 18 s c on ch, then work same as ears. Continue working same as ears until 4 sts remain, then work a row of loops, break thread.
Diamond for throat and mouth, Ch 2, work 2 s c in first ch, ch 1 to turn each row.
2nd Row—2 s c in each s c.
3rd, 4th and 5th Rows—1 s c in each s c.
6th and 7th Rows—Increase 1 s c in first and last s c, remainder even.
8th Row—1 s c in each s c.
9th and 10th Rows—Repeat 7th and 8th rows, then repeat 7th row.
Next Row—Start decreasing. Decrease 1 st at end of each row until two sts remain, break thread.
To Assemble Dog—Sew the two body pieces together at top, sew head pieces together at top, sew down face to first row. Attach diamond starting at first row of diamond, fit in for mouth, throat and neck. Sew head to body starting at top seam and sew down leaving the last 11 rows of body free. Sew the 11 rows of body together. Sew back of body and part of under section, leaving enough open to fill. Fill head and body with cotton and sew remainder of under section. Fit feet to legs and sew in position, fill and sew to body. Sew ears and tail as illustrated. Sew in buttons for eyes and embroider mouth.
