GAUGE:
Motif measures 2¾ inches square, when joined. For a single size bedspread, about 72 x 109 inches including border, make 25 x 38 motifs. For a double size bedspread, about 90 x 109 inches including border, make 31 x 38 motifs.

FIRST MOTIF … Ch 11, join with sl st. 1st rnd: 24 s c in ring; join. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, s c in same place as sl st, s c in next 5 s c, (ch 4, s c in next 6 s c) 3 times, ch 4; join to 1st s c. 3rd rnd: Ch 1, (s c in 6 s c, ch 4, s c in ch-4 loop, ch 4) 4 times, join (1 loop increased at each corner). 4th, 5th and 6th rnds: Work as for previous rnd, making s c in each s c of 6-s c group, and having an additional ch-4 loop at corners on each rnd (5 loops on 6th rnd). 7th rnd: Sl st and s c into 2nd s c, s c in next 3 s c, * (ch 4, s c in next loop) twice; ch 9, skip 1 loop. (S c in next loop, ch 4) twice, skip 1 s c, s c in next 4 s c. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-4 to s c first made. 8th rnd: Sl st and s c in next s c, s c in next s c, * (ch 4, s c in next loop) twice; in ch-9 loop make 6 d c, ch 4, and 6 d c. (S c in next loop, ch 4) twice, skip 1 s c, s c in next 2 s c. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 1, d c in s c first made (to count as last loop). 9th rnd: Ch 4, skip 2 s c, s c in next loop, ch 4, s c in next loop, ch 4, s c in each of next 6 d c. In corner loop make 3 s c, ch 4 and 3 s c, s c in next 6 d c, five ch-4 loops across to within corner. Continue thus around, joining last ch-4 to d c at base of ch-4 first made. Fasten off.

SECOND MOTIF … Work 1st 8 rnds as for 1st motif. 9th rnd: Work as for first motif to within ch-4 of first corner; ch 2, s c in corner loop of first motif, ch 2, make 3 more s c in corner loop of motif in work, s c in 6 d c, ch 2, s c in corresponding loop on first motif, ch 2, s c in next loop on motif in work; connect next 4 loops in same manner. Then continue to corner and connect corners as before. Complete rnd (no more joinings).
Make necessary number of motifs, joining at all adjacent loops; where 4 corners meet, join last 2 corners to previous joining. Then work as follows:

BORDER 1st rnd: Attach thread to loop preceding the 9-s c group of a corner motif, s c in this loop, ch 4, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c. (Ch 4, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c) twice; ch 4, in corner make s c, ch 4 and s c. * (Ch 4, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c) twice; ch 4, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, ch 4, s c in next loop. Make ch-4 loops to within next 9 s c, ch 4, skip 1 s c, s c in next sc. (Ch 4, skip 2 s c, s c in next s c) twice; ch 4, s c in joining between motifs. Repeat from * working corners of spread as before; ending with ch 2, half d c in 1st s c (12 loops across each motif). 2nd to 8th rnds incl: Ch-4 loops around, working s c, ch 4 and s c into each corner loop of spread and ending as for previous rnd. 9th rnd: Make 2 ch-4 loops, * ch 9, skip 1 loop, s c in next loop; (ch 4, s c in next loop) twice. Repeat from * around (thus alternating two ch-4 loops with one ch-9 loop), ending with ch 4, d tr at base of 1st loop. If necessary to make rnd come out even, skip one or two loops in rnd. 10th rnd: Ch 3, 5 d c in last loop made, s c in next loop, ch 4, s c in next loop, * in ch-9 loop make 6 d c, ch 4 and 6 d c. S c in next loop, ch 4, s c in next loop. Repeat from * around, ending with 6 d c, ch 4; join to top of ch-3 first made. Fasten off.
