HAT 2333-A  adaptable to any headsize

MATERIALS:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 9.
¼ yd. chiffon to match Knit-Cro-Sheen.
⅝ yd. grosgrain ribbon, 1½ inches wide, of a contrasting color.
⅜ yd. Lastex ribbon of the same contrasting color.
Cotton batting.

Starting at center of top of crown, ch 13. 1st rnd: 8 d c in 4th ch from hook, * d c in each of next 2 ch, 2 d c in next ch. Repeat from * once more, d c in each of next 2 ch, 9 d c in last ch. Now work along opposite side of foundation chain as follows: ** D c in each of next 2 ch, 2 d c in next ch. Repeat from ** once more, d c in each of next 2 ch. Join with sl st to top st of turning ch. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in each d c around, picking up only the front loop of each d c. Join with sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. 3rd rnd: * Insert hook in back loops of previous row and the row below, thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Repeat from * around (thus forming ridge), join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, * 2 d c in next st, d c in next st. Repeat from * around, making 5 d c in st directly over center d c of 9-d c groups on 1st rnd. Join. 5th and 6th rnds: Same as 2nd and 3rd rnds. Continue in this manner, making necessary increases to keep work flat, until oval measures about 6 inches wide and 7 inches long. This completes top of crown. Do not break off, but work side as follows: Make d c in each st around, without increasing, for 1½ inches. Fasten off.

Rolled Band … Starting at narrow end, make a chain 4 inches long. 1st row: D c in 4th ch from hook, d c in each ch across until row measures 3 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: D c in each d c across. Ch 3, turn. At end of 4th row, ch 1 to turn. 5th row: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Same as 5th row, ending with ch 4 to turn. 7th row: Tr in each s c across, picking up only the back loop of each s c. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: * Insert hook in back loop of next st on previous row and corresponding st of row below, thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 9th row: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 10th row: Same as 6th row. Repeat the 7th to 10th rows incl. 2 more times, being sure to have the same number of sts on each row (3 ridges). Ch 3 to turn at end of last row. 19th row: D c in each st across (making d c's in usual way). Ch 3, turn. The last 18 rows (2nd to 19th rows incl.) constitute the pattern. Work in pattern until there are 8 sets of ridges (about 19 inches). Break off.

Finishing … Sew one end of Lastex ribbon to lower edge of crown at center of long side. Sew other end to corresponding position on other edge. Cut a piece of ribbon 19 inches long. Sew ends together, allowing ¼ inch at each end for seam (thus making band 18½ inches around). Sew band along inside of lower edge of crown. Sew short ends of Rolled Band together. Then, holding right side of Rolled Band to wrong side of crown (ribbon band), sew both pieces together with over-and-over stitches. Now cut a ½-inch thickness of cotton batting 3 x 19 inches. Cut a strip of chiffon 6 x 20 inches. Lay cotton on chiffon, and roll both together loosely (thus forming a long roll, about 3½ inches thick). Tack chiffon enough to hold roll together. Then sew ends of roll together, thus forming a ring. Slip this ring over crown. Turn Rolled Band back over cotton roll, and sew in place along bottom of d c-row below last ridge of crown.

Then work along the 28 sts on opposite side of foundation chain to correspond. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: Tr in each st across, picking up only the back loop of each st. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: * Insert hook in back loop of next st on previous row and corresponding st on row below, thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Repeat from * across (a ridge). Ch 1, turn. 4th row: S c in each of next 15 sts, half d c in next st, d c in each of next 3 sts, tr in each of next 5 sts, d c in each of next 3 sts, half d c in next st, s c in each of next 5 sts. This completes half of row. Work other half to correspond. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: S c in each st across, always making necessary increases to keep work flat. Ch 4, turn. 6th and 7th rows: Same as 2nd and 3rd rows. 8th row: S c in each of next 7 sts, half d c in next st, d c in next st, tr in each st across to within 8 sts from center of curve, d c in next st, half d c in next st, s c in each of next 6 sts (making necessary increases to keep work flat). This is half of row. Work other half to correspond. 9th row: S c in each s c across. 10th and 11th rows: Same as 2nd and 3rd rows. 12th row: Same as 9th row. The 9th to 12th rows incl. constitute the pattern. Repeat these 4 rows until piece measures 7 inches deep, making necessary increases on s c-rows to keep work flat, and ending with a ridge. Ch 75 and join last st of ch to opposite end of same row (thus starting handle). Fasten and break off. With wrong side of work toward you, attach thread to 38th ch of handle and make s c in each st around. Join with sl st. Ch 1, turn. Continue in pattern, working in rnds and turning work at end of each rnd, until handle measures about 1¼ inches deep, keeping work flat. Break off. This completes one side of bag. Make another side same as this.

Flap … Starting at center top, ch 2. 1st row: 7 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Hereafter work in pattern as for sides of bag until piece measures about 3½ inches deep, increasing as necessary to keep work flat. Fasten and break off.

Finishing … Block crocheted pieces, following diagrams No. 1 and No. 2. Sew flap in position along top of one side, below handle. Sew outer edges together, omitting handles.

Lining Foundation … Cut 2 pieces of crinoline following diagram No. 1, and 1 piece following diagram No. 2. Cut 1 piece of lining material following entire diagram No. 3, and another piece omitting portion above X's. Sandwich the 2 pieces of lining between the 2 pieces of crinoline, and sew through all 4 thicknesses around outer edge, omitting handles. Turn raw edges of lining to outside, and sew in place. Slip Lining Foundation into crocheted bag, and sew in place along outside edges. Sew edges of crocheted handles together, having slipped crinoline handles inside. Sew snap fastener in place.
