GAUGE: 5 sts = 2 inches; 5 rows = 2 inches

NOTE: Rug is worked with a double strand throughout.

With National Blue ch 91, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows. 2nd ROW: 1 s c in each s c. Repeat 2nd row 9 times. 12th ROW: 1 s c in each of the next 28 s c, drop National Blue, attach Lt. Blue (when changing colors always complete last half of last st worked with next color), 1 s c in each of the next 35 s c, drop Lt. Blue, with National Blue 1 s c in each remaining s c. 13th ROW: With National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 26 s c, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 38 s c, with National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 26 s c. 14th ROW: With National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 25 s c, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 40 s c, with National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 25 s c. 15th ROW: With National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 24 s c, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 43 s c, with National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 23 s c. 16th ROW: With National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 46 s c, with National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 23 s c. 17th ROW: With National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 23 s c, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 47 s c, with National Blue 1 s c in each of the next 20 s c. 18th ROW: With National Blue 1 s c in each of the 1st 19 s c, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 49 s c, with Na­tional Blue 1 s c in each of the next 22 s c, cut National Blue. NEXT 44 ROWS: With Lt. Blue work 1 s c in each s c, cut yarn at end of last row.

FINISHING: Embroider rug in cross st ac­cording to chart.

EDGE: With a single strand of yarn working along side edge, attach National Blue in side of 1st row of National Blue, ch 2, d c in same space, * skip 1 row, sl st in side of next row, ch 2, d c in same space, repeat from * to corner, working along long edge ch 2, d c in same space, * skip 1 st, sl st in next st, ch 2, d c in same space, repeat from * to next corner, continue all around in same manner working National Blue over National Blue and Lt. Blue over Lt. Blue, cut yarn.

Blue ch 3, join to form a ring, ch 3, 11 d c in ring, join in 3rd st of ch. 2nd ROUND: Ch 3 (counts as 1st d c), d c in same space, 2 d c in each remaining d c, join. 3rd ROUND: Ch 3, 2 d c in next d c, * 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c, repeat from * all around, join in 3rd st of ch (36 d c). 4th ROUND: Working in d c inc in every 9th st (40 d c), join. 5th ROUND: Ch 1, 1 s c in each d c, join. 6th ROUND: Ch 3, working in back loop of sts only 1 d c in each s c, join. NEXT 6 ROUNDS: Working in both loops, ch 3, 1 d c in each st, join each round, cut yarn at end of last round. BRIM: 13th ROUND: Attach National Blue in joining, working in back loop of sts 2 s c in same space, 1 s c in next d c, * 2 s c in next d c, s c in next d c, repeat from * all around, join. 14th ROUND: Working in both loops ch 1, 1 s c in each s c, join. 15th ROUND: Work­ing in back loop of sts sl st in each s c, cut yarn.

SWAN: With White ch 9, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining st of ch inc 1 s c at end of ch (9 s c), ch 3, turn. 2nd ROW: S c in 2nd st from hook, s c in next st of ch, 1 s c in each remaining s c inc 1 s c at end of row, ch 1 to turn remaining rows. 3rd ROW: Working in s c inc 1 s c at beg and end of row. START NECK SHAP­ING: 1st ROW: Pull up a loop in each of the next 2 sts, Y O and pull through all loops at one time (dec), sl st in next st, ch 1, turn. 2nd ROW: Sl st in sl st, pull up a loop in same st and next st, Y O and pull through all loops at one time. 3rd ROW: Pull up a loop in the 1st st and in sl st, Y O and pull through all loops at one time, sl st in sl st. 4th and 5th ROWS: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows of neck. 6th ROW: 1 s c in each st. 7th ROW: Sl st in 1st st, s c in next s c. 8th ROW: S c in s c, sl st in sl st, ch 4, turn. 9th ROW: 1 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each of next 2 sts of ch, s c in next st, 2 s c in next st. 10th ROW: Skip 1st st, s c in next st, sl st in next st, cut yarn.

TAIL SECTION: Skip 1 st of body section (after neck), attach yarn in next st, 1 s c in each remaining s c, ch 2, turn. NEXT ROW: 1 s c in each of the 1st 2 s c, sl st in next 3 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, sl st in next 2 s c, cut yarn. Work another section in same manner.

LEAVES: With Dk. FINISHING: Sew sections of swan tog leav­ing lower edges free. Fill with kapok. Sew swan to topper along the free edges. Place leaves around swan and sew in place as illustrated.

Beg at top of cover with Lt. Blue ch 33. 1st ROW: 1 s c in 2nd st from hook and in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows. 2nd ROW: 1 s c in each s c. 3rd ROW: Working in s c inc 1 s c at beg and end of row. 4th and 5 ROWS: 1 s c in each s c. 6th ROW: Repeat 3rd row. 7th to 10th ROWS: 1 s c in each sc. 11th ROW: Repeat 3rd row. 12th to 17th ROWS: 1 s c in each s c. 18th ROW: Repeat 3rd row. 19th to 23th ROWS: 1 s c in each s c. 29th and 30th ROWS: Dec 1 st each side in each row (to dec: insert hook in st, pull loop through, insert in next st, pull loop through, Y O and work off all loops at one time), drop Lt. Blue (36 sts). Attach National Blue (when changing color always complete last half of last st worked with new color), ch 1, turn, cut Lt. Blue. 31st ROW: 1 s c in each of 1st 11 s c, drop National Blue, with Lt. Blue 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts, drop Lt. BORDER: Work Lt. Blue over Lt. Blue and National Blue over National Blue as fol­lows: 1st ROUND: Attach yarn in left cor­ner at top, working in s c all around work 3 s c in each of the 2 corners placing the s c close enough to keep work flat, join in 1st s c. 2nd ROUND: 1 s c in each s c, join. 3rd ROUND: Working in s c inc 6 sts evenly spaced around curved edge. 4th ROW: Do not work across straight edge, working in back loop of sts only inc 6 sts evenly spaced around curved edge, cut yarn, do not turn. 5th ROW: Attach yarn in 1st s c, working through back loop of sts only s c in same space, * ch 1, skip 1 s c, s c in next s c, repeat from * to opposite corner, ch 1, turn. 6th and 7th ROWS: S c in 1st ch 1 space, * ch 1, s c in next ch 1 space, repeat from * around curved edge to opposite corner, ch 1, turn, cut yarn at end of last row. With National Blue crochet a ch about 1½ yds. long and lace through last row of ch 1 spaces.
